Best & Worst Of The Web - December 7th, 2000

There are lots of great articles, and some really bad ones, on the Internet. Though we link to all of them at MacOS News Around The Web, some of them deserve special mention here. Most of what we will mention within these pages will be among the best, but on occasion we will talk about articles that are so bad or so wrong we just have to say something. Consider them mini-editorials on our part about things we think you might also be interested in.
Best [3:00 PM] C|Net News - Commentary: Apple's woes arise from its niche market
After years of nothing but continued good news, sans the perpetually slipping OS X ship date, Apple and the Mac community have taken a beating over the last month or so. Stocks have plummeted, moral is low, and OS X 1.0 can't possibly come soon enough. But why? This article has an interesting take on the situation. Our favorite quote from this piece:Overall, Apple is locked into a niche home market and must design the company around that. That means Apple should schedule new systems to the buying rhythms of that market, where most users will replace their hardware about every four to five years and will look for add-ons in the interim to extend the abilities of their present systems.
Look for an in-depth analysis on this issue tomorrow at The Mac Observer. Reviewer - Kyle D'Addario
Best [3:00 PM] Mac Night Owl - Why Do We Tolerate Mac OS Crashes?
This article asks a question that I have often asked myself...why DO we tolerate crashes? Of the many things that OS X promises, improved stability is the most desired feature on that list. OS 9 sometimes works, and sometimes doesn't. From our experience, OS X ALWAYS works. And it is still just a beta. This article takes a closer look at the user/computer/stability connection. Our favorite quote from this piece:Many are hoping that the release version of Mac OS X will fulfill the promise of ushering in a new era of true Mac OS reliability. The Public Beta is still rough enough around the edges to demonstate the potential, but not much more, but at least Mac users have a glimmer of the operating system's potential.
A glimmer? It is the real deal now. Reviewer - Kyle D'Addario
