by , 4:00 PM EST, January 11th, 2001

The Washington Apple Pi user group successfully refurbished and distributed 25 Macintosh systems to families around the Washington DC area this holiday season. In their ongoing Macintosh Reclamation Project, older Macs are revamped and put into circulation for families that don't yet have any type of computer system. According to The Washington Apple Pi group:

"Westarted this project many years ago for two reasons," says WAP PresidentLorin Evans. "First, to help those who might not be able to get a computerto have one. Secondly, to recycle these Macs to ensure they continue to giveyears of valuable service."

Just before Christmas, WAP distributed 25 complete computer set-ups toorganizations in the Washington, DC area. Those organizations will make surethe Macs will go to families that don't have computers. "This is just oneexample of our on-going Reclamation Project," says Evans. "Our volunteersspend many, many hours recycling all varieties of Macintoshes so that theymay be returned to the community." WAP has even sent computers to needyorganizations overseas.

The Mac computer set ups that were put together are as follows:

  • Macintosh 6100CD
  • 24meg RAM
  • 230 Meg Hard Drive
  • Preloaded software

The Mac Observer Spin:

While these computers are certainly not powerhouses, they will serve the purpose of providing a tool to access the Internet, allow children to write papers and do other school work, and provide an opportunity for kids to gain valuable computer experience. This is a really neat program.
