Wolfram Research has announced that their powerful and popular scientific application, Mathematica, will be making its way to Mac OS X. Mathematica is enormously popular with engineering and other scientific professionals, and is a staple at many high-ranking universities in the United States and elsewhere. According to Wolfram Research:
Wolfram Research announcedtoday that Mathematica, the world's leading technical computingsystem, will be available in a version that takes full advantageof the unique capabilities of Mac OS X.
"We have been following the development of Mac OS X with greatinterest," said Theodore Gray, cofounder of Wolfram Research andchief architect of the Mathematica user interface. "Mathematica4.1 running on Mac OS X has the makings of a remarkableenvironment for scientific computing. This promises to be ano-compromise combination of speed, stability, capability, andease."
"The supercomputing speed of Apple's Power Mac G4 provides anincredible environment for scientific computing, and with Mac OSX's unparalleled performance and ease of use, it's only going toget better," said Clent Richardson, Apple's vice president ofWorldwide Developer Relations. "Mathematica is the most powerfulsoftware for doing calculations in science, engineering, andmathematics, and we're thrilled to see Wolfram take advantage ofthe incredible technologies Mac OS X has to offer."
Mathematica is the system that top professionals in industry, research, and education turn to when they need to performdemanding calculations. The current release of Mathematica,Version 4.1, includes greatly enhanced symbolic differentialequation solvers and dramatic speed increases for statisticalfunctions.
Professionals are not the only ones who use Mathematica. Like theMacintosh, Mathematica is popular on college campuses around theworld. Students in engineering, mathematics, and other technicalfields use Mathematica to expand their knowledge and to do theirmost serious number crunching. With Mathematica running on Mac OSX, they will be able to use the latest in Apple technology to makethe most of their educational opportunities.
Mathematica for Mac OS 8/9 is available for US$1495. Pricing and release details have not yet been released. You can find more information at the Wolfram Research web site.
The Mac Observer Spin:
While not popular or important in a mainstream sort of way, applications like Mathematica are vital for Mac OS X's acceptance in the education market. Along with the statistical package, SPSS, these two program's availability on OS X will instantly lend credibility to the new OS.Observer Comments
