Orange Micro Announces New USB 2.0 Card

Orange Micro Announces New USB 2.0 Card

by , 2:00 PM EDT, April 3rd, 2001

Orange Micro has announced a new USB 2.0 PCI card. The new card offers four USB 2.0 ports, including one internal port. According to Orange Micro:

Orange Micro will now be the first to ship their OrangeUSB 2.0 Hi-Speed PCI Board. The OrangeUSB 2.0 Hi-Speed PCI Board will be available at major retail chain stores nationwide beginning in April.

The OrangeUSB PCI Board has 4 external and 1 internal USB 2.0 Hi-Speed ports. It has been certified by the USBIF to meet the USB 2.0 Hi-Speed hardware specifications. USB 2.0 Hi-Speed outperforms the older USB 1.1 by running up to 480 Mbits/s compared to the standard 12 Mbits/s. It is also "backward compatible" which means users can connect their current USB 1.1 peripherals and USB 2.0 Hi-Speed peripherals simultaneously.

The OrangeUSB 2.0 boards have several USB 2.0 software driver options for both Mac OS X, as well as Windows.

The new card is available for US$89. You can find more information at the Orange Micro Web site.

The Mac Observer Spin:

USB 2.0 generated a large amount of conversation toward the end of 2000, but hype surrounding the new connectivity technology has largely died down. FireWire technology has a huge head start on USB 2.0, and it is unlikely that USB 2.0 will replace FireWire as a connectivity standard.

However it is likely that USB 2.0 and FireWire will co-exist, much as USB and FireWire do on today's PowerMacs, for the time being.
