Bare Bones Software has released an OS X version of their extremely popular text editing utility, BBEdit. Version 6.1 of the text and HTML editor is now built to run natively under Mac OS X, a good day for Mac users as BBEdit is one of the most popular Mac programs on the market. According to Bare Bones Software:
Bare Bones Software today announced the immediate availability of version 6.1 of BBEdit(tm), the company's award-winning HTML and text editor. This update marks the first version of BBEdit that runs natively on Mac OS X, Apple's next generation operating system.
"We have a long and distinguished history of leadership in producing Mac-only software which makes the most of the Mac OS," said Rich Siegel, the founder, president and CEO of Bare Bones Software. "With the release of BBEdit for Mac OS X, we are proud to be among the first to deliver software which runs natively on Mac OS X, and which brings the power of this exciting new OS release to our customers."
"Mac OS X, which combines the power of Unix with the simplicity of the Mac, is the ultimate platform for developing exciting new web applications," said Philip Schiller, Apple's vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. "We are excited to see Bare Bones Software bringing the award winning BBEdit to Mac OS X and joining the growing list of new Mac OS X applications appearing daily."
BBEdit 6.1 takes advantage of several Mac OS X technologies, including robust integration with the native Perl tools. In addition, BBEdit 6.1 offers many new features and refinements, including enhanced FTP support, optional display of "hard" line numbers in soft-wrapped documents, and support for Emacs-style key equivalents for basic editing commands. BBEdit's improved FTP engine now supports specifying alternate ports, allowing the use of third-party port reflectors and SSH tunnels for FTP. New FTP Browser windows present a view of remote directories, making it easier than ever before to use BBEdit to edit files on FTP servers.
Third-party support for BBEdit's language module plug-ins continues to grow, with recent announcements of plug-ins for Python, SQL, and LDML.
BBEdit is available for US$119, with many special pricing options offered. You can find more information at the Bare Bones Software Web site..
The Mac Observer Spin:
It can be argued that BBEdit is one of the most significant applications to be "ported" to OS X in one way or another thus far. BBEdit is extremely popular with Web designers and software coders, and this release will help smooth the transition to OS X for many, many users.Observer Comments
