Remembering 1990 With A Couch Made From 35 Macs!
by , 12:00 PM EDT, April 30th, 2001
Last Friday, we ran a Remembering piece that focused on the Mac IIfx, one of the most interesting Macs that Apple ever made. That prompted Observer Tim Sitkiewicz to tell us about a couch made out of 35 of the big-boxes-that-could, so we asked him to send us a picture. According to Mr. Sitkiewicz:
From Observer Tim Sitkiewicz.
The macstore is an Apple Specialists with a large retail and service location in the St. Louis, MO area. We basically have a 10,000sq ft. warehouse where we had been collecting a lot of old machines, mainly because we couldn't sell them anymore. So about 3 years ago we decided we were going to pitch it all to make room for other things, though I am sure that would make a lot of Mac users cringe. We started filling dumpsters and the owner decided he wanted to make a Mac IIfx couch form the units. We basically just laid it out and started screwing and gluing it together and now it sits by our front door to let our customers have a place to sit. We have since made planters to put outside the front door from LC II's and such.
Uhhh... Can I have a cushion?

We also have an even larger version (800 x 600)
At US$10,000 a piece (give or take a bit) for each Mac IIfx when they were brand new, that comes out to a price tag of US$350,000 for this couch. That's so stunning, we don't even have anything clever or pithy to add. You can see the couch live and in person at The macstore. Thanks to Observer Tim Sitkiewicz for taking the time to send us the image.
If you have an old Apple ad for the Mac, the Apple ][ (or clones such as the Franklin), the Lisa, or any other Apple product, scan them in and send them to us, so that we can share them with other Mac fans. We are also looking for ads from the Mac cloners of the mid-90's such as Power Computing, Motorola, Umax, MacTell, Marathon Computer, PowerTools, and any others we have not mentioned. Feel free to make your scans quite large (high resolution) as we have had many Observers ask for printable versions. Check out our other Remembering articles too.
