The X Window Server system, Xfree86, has been updated to 4.1.0. Xfree86 is an implimentation of the X Window server, which allows users to compile and run applications written for the X Window server on a wide variety of Unix based operating systems, for OS X. Instructions to get the latest version running under Mac OS X 10.0.3 have also been posted. According to Torrey T. Lyons:
XFree86, a free implementation of X Windows, has been ported to Darwin and Mac OS X. This document is a collection of information for anyone experimenting with running X Windows on Apple's next generation operating system. Please send any comments on this page to torrey@mrcla.com . If you are also working on modifications to the Darwin X server, please let me know.
You can find download links and detailed installation information at the Xfree86 Web site. We would like to thank Observer Ralph Miranda for pointing this out to us.
The Mac Observer Spin:
An X Window Server implementation seems to currently offer the quickest route for get new and different software to Mac OS X. Eventually we will see more and more "native" OS X applications, but until that time this is a great way for OS X users to take advantage of a wider variety of programs.Observer Comments
