Canvas 8 For OS X Coming This Summer

by , 1:00 PM EDT, June 8th, 2001

Deneba has announced that the next version of Canvas for the Macintosh, Canvas 8, will be Carbonized to run natively under Mac OS X. Canvas is a full featured image editing and creation tool and it provides users with a host of powerful tools and features. According to Deneba:

Canvas has always been slightly ahead of its time. After all, we were the first to integrate drawing, image editing, document design, presentations and web graphics design into one incredibly lucid program. Not to mention our breakthrough Sprite technology which made it possible to apply unbelievable transparency and layer effects to any object, bitmap image or text. Now with new Canvas 8 we're soaring to even greater heights: over 100 new features and enhancements that will let you explore the farthest limits of your creative powers in every medium with a minimum of wasted effort.

With the release of OS X, there is a lot of eagerness for Canvas 8's Macintosh version - which will be OSX-native, will run on OS 9, and will be released later this Summer. Our R&D team is working around the clock to complete the Mac version as soon as possible. Canvas 8 for Macintosh will support scripting via AppleScript as well as the ColorSync color management system.

Pricing for the Macintosh version of Canvas 8 has not yet been set, but the Windows version of Canvas 8 is available for US$399. You can find more information at the Deneba Web site.

The Mac Observer Spin:

As is the case with today's announcement of Micromat's Drive 10 program, Deneba can go a long way in capturing Mac market share by getting an OS X version of Canvas out the door before some of the competing products like Illustrator, Freehand, and Photoshop. Freehand for OS X has already been announced, and like we said before we tend to agree with Jobs' assessment of the OS X software situation; brand and program loyalty will take a back seat to OS X availability.

Those that get their products in the hands of OS X users first are going to have a wonderful chance to capture market share.
