Mac OS X emacs Easter Egg - Cookie Recipes, Bad Jokes, And More

Mac OS X emacs Easter Egg - Cookie Recipes, Bad Jokes, And More

by , 10:00 AM EDT, April 17th, 2002

Q: What do you call a person who hacks while wearing no clothes?
A: A gnudist.

This little knee-slapper and many more can be found lurking in your copy of OS X. TMO Forum Mod David Nelson pointed out this interesting fact in our forums: if you pop open your Terminal and look in /usr/share/emacs/20.7/etc, you'll see a whole mess of files: lame puns on the words 'gnu,' and 'emacs', cookie recipes, information about the League for Programming Freedom, a BYTE interview with Richard Stallman of the Free Software Foundation, and Stallman's discussions on censorship and why software should not have owners.

You can't view these right there in the Finder, so here's the step-by-step for those non-Unix-savvy Observers:

  • Open the Terminal and type cd /usr/share/emacs/20.7/etc.
  • Type ls to list the files.
  • To see the files' contents, type pico <filename> (eg. pico COOKIES). Use Ctrl-V to page through the document.

Oh yeah, you'll also find some other stuff there as well... tutorials and so forth. But hey! Cookies!

The Mac Observer Spin:

You have to love the Open Source community's sense of humor. Since Steve Jobs cracked down on Easter Eggs in the Mac OS when he returned to the helm of the company, it's good that the various open source licenses included with some elements of Mac OS X allow us to still be surprised on occasion.
