Apple To Release Rackmount Server On May 14th
by , 4:30 PM EDT, May 6th, 2002
News.com reported today that Apple will be releasing a rackmount server on May 14th. Steve Jobs made the announcement in today's WWDC keynote. The short mention from News.com:
Jobs also said that on May 14 Apple will introduce a rack-mounted server, the first dedicated server Apple has introduced in a long time. Jobs did not provide specifications or details.
May 14th would be Tuesday-next, or 8 days from the time of this writing. Check out the News.com report for additional on-site details from the keynote.
The Mac Observer Spin:
We have long expected Apple to announce a rackmount server, and we are absolutely delighted to see that it is finally coming. With Apple pushing the Unix-aspects of Mac OS X, and the introduction of a much needed server, it would seem that Apple is ready to be serious about the corporate market.Of course, a rackmounted server would also work very well for some education environments, rendering farms, large publishing concerns, and other creative fields, but it's the corporate and Web-serving market that are most likely to want a rackmountable server. It should also be noted that Apple is pushing improved Windows networking support in "Jaguar," the next major release of Mac OS X that was also highlighted at today's keynote. That too is a direct play for the corporate market.
