MWNY - Steve Jobs Hints Of Move To Intel As A Possibility

Will wonders never cease? Reuters has published an article about MACWORLD New York that includes a very tiny mention of a very large subject: Mac OS X on Intel. In that mention, the way it is presented by Reuters, Steve Jobs hints that moving Mac OS X to Intel is a possibility. From the article:

Some analysts have also urged Apple to move to microchips from Intel Corp. from those made by Motorola Inc. and International Business Machines Corp. to cut costs.

Asked about that possibility, Jobs said that first the company had to finish the transition to the OS X operating system, expected around the end of this year.

"Then we'll have options, and we like to have options," he said.

You can read the full article for more information about the Expo, Apple's stock, and other related issues.

The Mac Observer Spin:

This is a bit of a startling development, not because of the possibility of OS X on x86, but rather because of the nature of Steve Jobs' comments. Mr. Jobs is notoriously anxious about keeping his company's cards close to his chest, and doesn't usually announce strategic direction in passing. Yet, here we have statements that clearly suggest that a move to Intel is at least a possibility.

No doubt the Intelheads among us are delighted at the prospect; beware of a new deluge of people clamoring for Apple to make just such a move.

It's also possible that Mr. Jobs is applying a little heat to Motorola's toes. With him, you can never tell, though we hope there is such an innocent reason for Mr. Jobs' comments. One thing is for certain, it sure would be interesting to see Apple try and explain what it meant when talking about the MHz Myth.

What MHz Myth?
