According to an article from C|Net titled Home is where the computer is, a hefty portion of computer users see their computer as the center of their digital lifestyle. This information was gleaned from the 2002 International Digital Lifestyle Study, sponsored by Dell and Microsoft, which polled folks from the US and Europe who owned computers and other devices such as MP3 players and cell phones. From the article:

"We're seeing a lifestyle shift from almost exclusive television use to a higher percentage of people's lives spent on a computer," said Mark Oldani, director of marketing at Dell.

The study also found that nearly one in three computer owners plans to buy another digital product this holiday season.

The Mac Observer Spin:

In other developments recently uncovered: The wheel is round. This "lifestyle switch" is old news to Steve Jobs and crew, they've been preaching the Digital Hub sermon for two years, and have created a slew of iApps to back up what they've preached. While Microsoft, Dell, and others have been trying to figure out how their boxes can remain relevant in the coming years, Apple already figured it out and pointed the way. In the process, the company has remained profitable by offering innovations that position the computer as the hub of the Digital Lifestyle.

It remains to be seen what Microsoft and Dell does with this revelation. We believe that, even if they decide to follow Apple and create their own versions of the iApps, they won't overtake Apple's lead because, to steal a line from a Bond movie: Nobody does it better.
