Apple Knowledge Base Article - Problem/Solution For Logging In To Mac OS X Server From Windows File Sharing

by , 1:00 PM EST, December 24th, 2002

Apple has added a new article to the Knowledge Base regarding Windows File Sharing users not being able to log in to a Mac OS X Server network. The problem is due to a missing tim_password value in NetInfo. Apple's Knowledge Base (sometimes referred to as the KBase) is a central location for all of Apple's support documents and other important information.

In Mac OS X Server, if a user is unable to login to Windows File Sharing, NetInfo may be missing a tim_password value. The solution is to follow the directions in the Knowledge Base article:

Title

Mac OS X Server: Users Cannot Log In to Windows File Sharing, Do Not Have tim_password Value in NetInfo

Topic

If the root password for the local and parent NetInfo domain are different when the Authentication Manager is in use, users in the parent domain will not have tim passwords set. This prevents users from logging in via Windows File Sharing.

Symptom

Affected users are not able to log in via Windows File Sharing and do not have a tim_password value in NetInfo.

Products affected

  • Mac OS X Server 10.0.3 to 10.1.4
  • Clients logging in via Windows File Sharing (SMB)

Solution

  1. Connect to the server via Server Admin.
  2. Click the General tab.
  3. Choose the NetInfo/root domain from the Users & Groups menu.
  4. Reset the users' passwords to create a tim_password value in NetInfo. You may do this either using a batch edit or one at a time.

You can find the new Knowledge Base article at Apple's Web site.
