Now Synchronize Your Address Book With Your .Mac Account
by , 8:00 AM EST, January 30th, 2003
Here's a bit of news that will make .Mac users happy: Your Address Book on your local Mac (running Mac OS X) can now be synchronized with the Address Book at the .Mac Web site, as well as with other Macs you may own. Using iSync version 1.0, .Mac users can simply login and follow the extremely simple instructions to synchronize the entries in their local Address Book with entries they may have in their online .Mac Address Book.
Now, you can get to e-mail addresses, phone numbers, and any and all of the other information you may have in each entry of your Address Book anywhere and anytime you can get access to the Web. What's more, you can control what Address Book info is shown, and in what order, via the improved .Mac Address Book Preferences.
For more information stop by Apple's .Mac Web site.
The Mac Observer Spin:
This small improvement to the services offered by .Mac is just that, small, and won't do anything to make .Mac more valuable to many folks. For other .Mac users, however, this is a Very Big Deal. Being able to use all of the information that you may have accumulated at home via the Internet just makes life a little bit easier. Isn't that what computing is supposed to be all about?Better yet, such incremental increases in features enhances the .Mac experience, and that's something Apple needs to continue to do to not only lure more to the service, but to make existing .Mac subscribers want to renew once their year is up next Fall.
One thing we would like to see Apple do is allow us greater flexibility to limit what information gets displayed, instead of forcing us to use a predefined set of fields. We may not want phone numbers and addresses shown, for instance, and hopefully Apple will be able to build that into this service in the future.
