WWDC Sessions Spotlight - Java State Of The Union

by , 11:00 AM EDT, April 24th, 2003

We announced earlier this week that the World Wide Developer Conference (WWDC) daily session grid had been posted. We thought it would be interesting to spotlight some of those sessions as we march towards the event. Today's session spotlight looks at session 600, "Java Overview/State of the Union." This session is designed to offer Java developers a reason to develop on and for Mac SO X.

With Java having become important to the corporate world, despite Microsoft's attempts to derail it in favor of its own .Net platform, Apple's support of Java has become equally important. Java performance usually lagged on the Mac platform before Mac OS X, but Apple has put a lot of effort to change that with Mac OS X. From the session description:

Discover what Apple has in store for Java on Mac OS X. You'll learn about Apple's implementation of J2SE version 1.4.1, a major advance with over 60% more classes than version 1.3.1. The underlying Java implementation has been re-engineered to take advantage of Cocoa frameworks--find out what this implies for your Java development projects. There are over 100 new packages for you to work with, supporting new XML, low-level I/O, and new GUI features among others.

This session is scheduled on Monday, July 23rd, from 5:00 to 6:30 PM (PDT). Remember that Apple has rescheduled WWDC for June 23rd through the 27th in order to accommodate the next major release of Mac OS X, dubbed Panther by Apple. If you want to find more information on the daily session grids, registration, or other WWDC info, visit the WWDC site.
