The New York Post iChats About The iSight

by , 10:00 AM EDT, June 30th, 2003

In an article in the New York Post, the author looks at some of the items that Apple introduced alongside the G5, namely the iSight camera and iChat AV. The article looks at the iChat AV beta, and the iSight's ease of installation, picture quality, and the ability to focus and tune out ambient noise automatically. From the New York Post:

After plugging in iSight, Apple's new digital video camera, and installing iChat, Apple's new conferencing software, Mac users can at least talk with their buddies about Apple's gleaming aluminum G5 computer before they can get it in August.

Apple is pushing sales of the camera by making free beta versions of iChat's software available on its Web site. An official version isn't due out until the end of the year.

But the camera is already on sale on the Web and in stores for $149. "The camera just plugs in without configuring it," gushed Todd Benjamin, Apple's product manager for the G5 as he was beamed intothe Apple store in SoHo through iChat. "It recognizes who it's supposed to be focused on, and automatically adjusts."

You can read the full article at the New York Post's Web site.

The Mac Observer Spin:

As is usually the case with this sort of article, the news as far we are concerned is not what was said, but rather the fact that it was said. This sort of article offers Apple great exposure, and we think it very important for a mainstream audience to get that exposure.

We think that iSight and iChat AV could help Apple sell more Macs in the consumer space, and perhaps even in the corporate space, if the company can properly market the two products. Both technologies have appeal that reaches far beyond the tech-savvy crowd more likely to get their tech news from sites like this than a newspaper.
