First Mozilla Thunderbird Milestone Released

by , 1:00 PM EDT, July 29th, 2003

Mozilla.org has released the first milestone build of its standalone mail application, Mozilla Thunderbird 0.1. Some of Thunderbird's most noteworthy features include customizable toolbars and junk mail filtering. From the release notes:

Mozilla Thunderbird is a redesign of the Mozilla mail component. Our goal is to produce a cross-platform, stand alone mail application using the XUL user interface. More information about the Mozilla Thunderbird project is available here. We leverage much of the functionality already developed for the Mozilla Seamonkey mail component.

This is our first milestone release. We recognize that we have a lot more to do. At the same time, we are extremely excited about the progress of Mozilla Thunderbird and want to share it with the community. This current milestone is based on a running snapshot of the Mozilla 1.5b trunk.

Thunderbird 0.1 is available for Mac OS X, Linux and Windows. The download can be found via the Thunderbird home page at http://www.mozilla.org/projects/thunderbird/

The Mac Observer Spin:

While some may lament Thunderbird's lack of a native Mac interface, this application shows great promise nonetheless. It is reasonably easy to use and has enough features and settings that most users will probably find it more than sufficient for their needs. We look forward to covering future versions of Thunderbird and tracking the application's evolution as development continues.
