IBM Releases Optimized Beta Compilers For G5

by , 3:15 PM EDT, August 28th, 2003

It looks like Big Blue has another present for the Macintosh community. This time, the surprise is for developers. IBM has released a free OS X beta version of its XL C/C++ V.6.0 compilers to exploit the new G5 microprocessor.

The compilers, which are for the C, C++ and Fortran languages, are based on IBM's existing VisualAge C++ for its UNIX-based AIX operating system.

According to the IBM Web page, VisualAge C++ V6.0 for AIX generates efficient, high performance software that supports both 32 and 64-bit architectures. It also includes tools for high program optimization and performance, including the ability to tune the code for specific PowerPC processors.

The XL C/C++ V.6.0 compiler package can be downloaded from IBM's Web site.

IBM representatives were not available for comment as of press time.

The Mac Observer Spin:

An optimized compiler for the new G5 is a very welcomed addition for Mac developers as well as people in search of the true performance capability of the new processor. It's important to keep in mind that this is only a beta version. We're sure there is much more work to do in terms of squeezing the most performance from the G5.

It is also unclear at this point whether IBM plans to include support for Objective-C in this or any future compiler. Objective-C and Java are currently the only ways for developers to take advantage of the Cocoa frameworks in OS X. At this time we don't know if that precludes the use of any XL-compiled code in Cocoa applications. These compilers should be fine for all OS X Carbon applications though.
