TMO Rolls Out New, Advanced Comment System
by , 10:30 AM EDT, May 6th, 2004
You've long asked for it. We've long wanted it. The day is here, at last. We are happy, as happy as anyone could possibly be, to announce our brand new, advanced comment system. The new system brings a number of highly requested features to the forums, including the ability to see each post without clicking through to a separate page, as well as the ability for registered users to edit their posts.
We've gone much further than that, however, having introduced some additional features to the comments, some of which are unique to TMO. First of all, you can decide how you want your comments ordered, from oldest to newest, or newest to oldest. You can also decide how many comments you would like to see on each page, a boon for those readers on dial-up access. You can choose anywhere from "0" to "All," with "0" meaning you won't see any comments at all.
Furthermore, we've introduced a brand new feature that allows you to hide any particular thread you wish. This is handy for keeping track of what you have read, moving very long posts out of your way, or even hiding a post from an annoying poster you don't wish to see.
But wait, there's more...
We now have the ability to label any particular user a "troll." When so labeled, the troll's posts will be automatically closed, hidden to view unless you click to open it. With the tremendous problems we have faced regarding trolls in the article comments, as well as the reaction from too many people against those trolls, this new tool will be a major tool in our arsenal for once again making the TMO comments a place for intelligent discourse.
Lastly, we are now able to moderate the comments more easily. This means that we can remove spam posts, edit gratuitous profanity without deleting posts, more easily delete posts that need deleting, and more easily ban anyone needing banning.
Note that the new comment system will only be available on articles going forward. Older articles will have the old comment system. You can see the new comments below, and we emcourage you to use them.
We have put tremendous work into making all this happen, with Stephen Swift working on the phpBB engine to make it possible, Gavin Mahan developing the front end, and the new, very spiffy close/view feature, and implementing the look and feel originally developed by Raena Armitage, the designer of TMO's new look. Dave Hamilton and I would like to thank all three of them for their very hard work, especially the many, many hours put in by Stephen and Gavin.

Ah, welcome to the forums, Paul/Reality Check. I was wondering if you would actually be the one to get that user name.
I am such a nice guy that I am going to give you a warning, despite your history. The moment you post a pointless troll post, you will be labeled a troll. That will auto-hide all of your posts.

Thanks, guys! I can go back to my own handle now without worrying about trolls entering posts with my name on their rantings. I like being able to quickly scroll through the comments as well, that will be a great time-saver.
I also appreciate the troll-control features. Much needed. However, I'd be almost as quick to auto-hide anyone that responds to the trolls, since the responses are what brings them back in the first place, and they're just about as annoying as the trolls themselves.
Quick fix on the КК problem! I only see them down at the comment entry window now.
Man, you fixed that already, too. Can't point things out fast enough!

Thanks for the notes, Edtekker. I wanted to note that I also consider the reactionary types to be as big a problem as the troll(s). Registration, of course, cuts down on much of that, but we will be reining those folks in, too.
Lastly, please note that we are experiencing lots of bugs. We are working on them, and anyone who sees anything amiss is asked to note it here.

Just keep in mind that a post that may be critical of Apple doesn't necessarily mean a troll. I've seen knee-jerk reactions here that someone (including myself) mentions oh....lousy marketshare or Apple's stubborness not to open up the iPod to other formats or wondering where the heck Apple went with computer updates....automatically gets labelled a troll from a multitude of the other posters here.
I'm sure you're already aware, but I had to vent my 2 cents.

Thanks for the comments, iggyb. I very much agree with the sentiments you expressed. Being critical of Apple does not a troll make; being a troll is all about presentation and intent.
Also, to the anonymous person accusing TMO of using RC to spur comments: You obviously have no idea of who we are and what we stand for to make such a lame accusation.

Yeah, we ALL have our occassional cranky days and/or over-the-top responses to an issue posted here sometimes, so I hope our passion doesn't get us stuck with a "troll" label. We Mac users are a pretty volatile bunch sometimes, so I hope healthy dissent still has a place.
It's incredibly obvious which of us here regularly contribute to the discussion, and who among us are only here to poke us with a stick. I promise not to poke, but let me feel free to wave it at others... the verbal "fencing" here is always enjoyable!
BTW (to stay on-topic)... HOORAY HOORAY HOORAY!!!!!!! <whew>
Thu May 06, 2004 1:58 pm Subject: Error displayed instead of comments
When I open some (but not all) articles, the comments area is missing and the following error appears:

It seems to affect new articles without comments (but I can't be sure.) The ability to post comments is not available. Running W2K, IE5.1 from work.
Thu May 06, 2004 2:00 pm Subject: Oh yeah...introductions
...I always posted as "Ken P" here in the comments, and almost never in the forums. So now it's revealed that I only had FOUR posts! Geez, I feel like a newbie now...can't I get credit for the hundreds of posts I made HERE??? (just kidding...this overhaul is wonderful and all, but I still feel like a newbie...)

I don't think TMO would exist without "healthy dissent".
Remember what Bryan said about "intent"?
Heat-Of-The-Moment responses to subjects you feel strongly about is part of being human; but apologizing for rash words, and trying to guard against too many future incidents is part of being an adult.
Let loose the three legged goat of discourse!
