Analyst: Apple Could be "Microsoft of music"
Analyst: Apple Could be "Microsoft of music"
by , 8:50 AM EDT, July 28th, 2004
Merrill Lynch analyst Steven Milunovich told clients Tuesday he believes the recently announced alliance between Apple and Motorola could turn Apple into the "Microsoft of music" and make the iPod the "defacto standard in digital music."
Mr. Milunovich said the Motorola alliance is a "net positive for the iPod"
"Although we expect Motorola music phones to have 0.5GB of memory for songs by the end of the year, this is a different market from the 4GB iPod mini or 20 and 40GB fourth-generation iPods," he said. "Getting users to try iTunes on their cell phone introduces them to portable music the Apple way."
iPods are the leading portable music player, iTunes is the leading online music seller, and it appears Apple understands it has to work with others to dominate the space. Apple could become the Microsoft of music."
Mr. Milunovich also wrote that the effect of RealNetworks' new Harmony software to allow its music to be played on the iPod is still uncertain and could result in legal action by Apple
"Real could boost demand for the iPod but reduce music store sales," Mr. Milunovich said, adding that he's waiting to see if Apple will sue RealNetworks.

" and the everyone i see will NEVER come close to using the full capacity of those things"
I dont know about everyone, nut I'm regretting now I bought the 15gigs and not the 20gs because I have 16gigs of music on my computer and not enough space ont my ipod. I get one hell of a lot of use out of my ipod, as do most people I know (including using it as a portable hard drive).

Really, Apple is practically two worlds right now. There's the iTunes world - the music store and iPods - that's going gangbusters. Then there's the rest of Apple (Mac computers) world, which is sorta doing all right. So they're really saying that iTunes will become the Microsoft of Music. (Yecch.)
Er ... the VHS of music.
The Xerox of music.
Maybe the Google of music. As in, it becomes so ubiquitous that you can't imagine another way to do the same function.
Maybe even the "fax" of music. The noun that becomes a verb. (Oops - I guess Google and Xerox did this, too.)
The magic of Google News got me to this forum. So if you want to blame anybody for the sudden high visibility, blame them.

I would suffocate and die under a 4GB cap.
Well maybe if you go on week-long vacations...
Look, 4 GB carries about 2 DAYS worth of music. I listen for 2 hours a day so I doubt I'll ever listen to all of it.
Each night I can sync to a different playlist so I have different music every day. And it's not like my playlists are segregated by type of music. I have a wide variety no matter what I up-load.
Like I said, maybe you're taking long trips or something...but for me it works just fine.
Anyway, I think you are a bit above average in terms of the amount of music you own. And that's why the make the larger iPods. I know the mini isn't for everyone and you're a perfect example.
But you're beating up the HD by writing and overwriting the drive's entire contents every night. I use my iPod in the exact same way you do (riding the subway to and from work) as well as the all-too-rare vacation. But the large capacity drive gives me the ability to play anything in my library I want to at a moment's notice and it doesn't require me to resync a new playlist every day nor smack the HD with wholesale overwriting on a daily basis. I'm not saying what you're doing is "wrong" of course, though I do recall that my first iPod (which Apple replaced with my current one for unrelated reasons) didn't like it much when I would replace contents so frequently...
I don't know if I'm above average, either - certainly a number of other posters above commented on running out of space. Naturally, those of us who post on Mac message boards are not a representative sample of the iPod-user universe. But I doubt I'm that unusual.

Honestly, I only sync my iPod once a week. And when I do that, it's usually only 50 or so songs that get changed. Hardly the whole hard drive.
Your point is a good one but I was really only explaining how I COULD do it if I became bored with my 1,000 songs as you seemed to suggest you would. I don't become bored so I don't end up doing it to that extent.
So in your case you'd wear out your hard drive if you did this which is why you don't have a mini. I only change 50 or so songs a week so I'm not really worried.
EDIT: And it's not such a big deal to me. I have 12 GB of music TOTAL and only 5 GB in my playlist that I listen to AT HOME. So it's not a huge cut for me to go down to 4 GB for the road. Obviously you're dealing with a lot more than me.

'Sal good. That's why there are different models and different capacities, after all! I only came into this because I disagree with the premise - which I've seen in this thread and in a couple of others - that there's no real purpose to having more than a 4GB HD in a music player. Ultimately, that doesn't sound like your proposition... but it was the premise of some other poster, who you just happened to quote and comment on -- and now here we are!

Hey you guys! What are you doing?! Don't you know you're supposed to fight and call each other names on internet forums? Quit being nice and getting along and everything in front of the Google News visitors.

I have a first generation iPod so its just a 5 Gig, I harly have enough space on there... I love my iPod and all but its just not enough space for me, I will get a new one in good time though.. Just looking at what I have in iTunes, I have a 24 gigs of music, and I have several audio books that aren't in there.. I could really use about a 50-60 gig iPod. I like to use my iPod as a portable firewire hard drive as well... so its nice to have a few gigs free for my other files...
I personally wouldn't be wasting a high capacity iPod, but I am not sure weather or not I would be considered on the high end of things...

i still think that anyone who markets a portable player, a desktop player, and a download service will trap the masses. i have 8,000 legally ripped mp3's for my personal use and for DJing, yet no one has convinced me to buy their MP3 player yet. i still have the impression that people with iPods dont have anything good to spend their money on, and the everyone i see will NEVER come close to using the full capacity of those things. i know people who have the Zen, the Dell player, or the ipod, that have MAYBE 500 songs on them...so wasteful!!
stupid mindless masses...
