Apple Releases Security Patch For "Portable Network Graphics"

Apple Releases Security Patch For "Portable Network Graphics"

by , 6:15 PM EDT, August 9th, 2004

Apple has released a security update today called Security Update 2004-08-09. The sparse release notes say that the file updates libpng (Portable Network Graphics). Those release notes:

Security Update 2004-08-09 delivers a number of security enhancements and is recommended for all Macintosh users. This update includes the following components:

  • libpng (Portable Network Graphics)

Apple is providing a link to a KBase article on security updates, but as of this writing, that article has no information on Security Update 2004-08-09.

In addition to this security update, Apple released Mac OS X 10.3.5. TMO has confirmed that the update includes this security patch. You can download the update through Software Update Control Panel, and the download weighs in at 1 MB. Some readers have reported that the update is not available once you install 10.3.5.

This update probably fixes the PNG security hole mentioned in a previous article. Way to go Apple! Let's see how long before Microsoft releases a similar update...

Just updated both using system preferences. First to download and update was the Security Patch, then OS X.

All seems to be going well. I did my"big" test - VPC - and yet again Apple has managed an upgrade that didn't screw it, or my Win apps, up - something that appears to be difficult for MS. Both 98 & XP appear to be working fine - or as fine as they can . . .

Apple's security page <http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61798> states that the individual patch is for Mac OS 10.3.4 and 10.2.8, whereas the 10.3.5 update includes this patch.
