.Mac members can now download version 7.5 of McAfee's anti-virus protection software, Virex.
New features of version 7.5 include real time 'on access' scanning, automatic eUpdate functionality, scheduling options for on-demand scans and updating and the latest McAfee anti-virus scan engine. In addition, McAfee Virex employs generic detection, which involves using a single virus definition to detect and clean many variants of the same virus family.

It found 3 things, all in Mail's 'Deleted' folder. No ill effects from running it. Some good interface changes, now I don't have to cut and paste the text report over to a word processor and do a Find to figure out what virus was found. I've not turned on the new scanning features, as they might cause a performance hit on this old G3 iMac.
I held off downloading the first Virex version due to mentions of slowness and other issues. That and the fact there just are no Mac OS X viruses (proof of concept maybe, but nothing live) and I don't use any Microsoft Office products, made me figure I was fine for the time being.
So, it's a couple years on and I've had no problems, but I'm not naive enough to think this will always be the case. And I do have .Mac, so, should I now take advantage of the Virex download? I've upgraded my processor speed (from 400MHz to 1GHz) and have fast drives installed. What does Virex look for exactly since there are few mac X only viruses? Does it look for PC virusesa s well so you don't pass them on in an email? Does it check fo crossplatform macro viruses?
Any experiences or pointers to reviews of the latest version appreciated!
