"Think Different" Competes in Yahoo! Advertising Poll
"Think Different" Competes in Yahoo! Advertising Poll
by , 10:30 AM EDT, August 23rd, 2004
Yahoo! is running a Web poll looking for the five best advertising slogans of all time (thanks to Observer Creole for the heads up in the TMO forums), and one of the 26 choices is Apple's famous "Think Different" campaign slogan. The Internet power house will forever immortalized the five advertising slogans chosen by Web denizens in the "Madison Avenue Advertising Walk of Fame."
"Think Different" was the first major branding campaigns from Apple after the return of Steve Jobs to the helm in 1997. It helped launch the iMac, and many have since credited the campaign with helping to relaunch Apple in the minds of consumers.
From Yahoo!'s Web site:
Even though they're part of our everyday conversation, they're anything but ordinary. Give your favorite ad slogan the credit it deserves and it could be one of five winners to be remembered forever in the "Madison Avenue Advertising Walk of Fame." You only have one vote to make a statement, so put some thought into it.
- A diamond is forever. (DeBeers)
- A mind is a terrible thing to waste. (United Negro College Fund)
- Be all you can be. (U.S. Army)
- Can you hear me now? (Verizon)
- Don''t leave home without it. (American Express)
- Fly the friendly skies. (United Airlines)
- Friends don't let friends drive drunk. (U.S. Dept. of Transportation)
- Got Milk? (California Milk Processor Board)
- It takes a lickin', but it keeps on tickin'. (Timex)
- Just do it. (Nike)
- Let your fingers do the walking. (Yellow Pages)
- Look Mom, no cavities! (Crest)
- Melts in your mouth, not in your hands. (M&M's)
- Reach out and touch someone. (AT&T)
- Sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don't. (Almond Joy/Mounds)
- Tastes great, less filling. (Miller)
- The ultimate driving machine. (BMW)
- Think Different (Apple)
- Time to make the doughnuts. (Dunkin Donuts)
- Wassup?! (Budweiser)
- We bring good things to life. (General Electric)
- We try harder. (Avis)
- When you care enough to send the very best. (Hallmark Cards)
- Where's the beef? (Wendy's)
- You deserve a break today! (McDonalds) You've come a long way baby. (Virginia Slims)
The results will be announced in September, and the site is not revealing live numbers for the poll. Yahoo! also appears to be taking precautions to prevent multiple votes. You can vote for your pick at Yahoo!'s Web site.
The Mac Observer Spin:
There are some very memorable slogans in the poll, some of them years old, and they are all still getting mileage for their respective companies. It's interesting that Yahoo! chose "Think Different" instead of "Why 1984 won't be like 1984," the slogan in what had consistently been rated the best TV commercial of all time. That said, "Think Different" was repeated oft and loudly, and it may well be the more memorable of the two slogans.

I voted for 'Just Do It' for reasons that I listed in the main mac forum here at TMO, the main reason being it's strong identity not only with the Nike brand but also what Nike is/does.
'Can you hear me now' is good, but I can never remember which cell phone provider it's for.
'Wassuuup' is also memorable, but not connected to beer in anyway, although I identify it strongly with budweiser (in fact, 'Can you hear me now' and 'Wassuuup' or are almost complete opposites: one has strong connections to the product (verizon) while one has, imo, strong connection with the brand (bud))
Mon Aug 23, 2004 11:27 am Subject: More Apple RDF..
This is just another example of Apple's RDF. With only 0.00023% market share and no software they will be dead in a week. All you "iLemmings" are being suckered by poor quality and.... oh who am I kidding, even when I try, I can't be as obtuse as RC...
It was a joke btw, you know, just make up some numbers and rant about something that has nothing to do with the story.. sound familiar?
I voted "Think Different"
I had to vote for "Time to make the doughnuts" cuz I like doughnuts about as much as I like my Mac. I don't eat my Mac, though. Not even with chocolate frosting. Although sometimes I eat doughnuts while working on my Mac and get frosting ont he keyboard. oops.
Like a wise cartoon man once said: Mmmmmmm... doooooughnuts. (drool)
