You Can't - it's vaporware.

RAM slots, airport slot, all easy to reach. The drives should be upgradable fairly simply. The question is if the processor is soldered in place or socketed. If the latter then it should be easy to upgrade to a 2.5Ghz when that comes out.

Actually, apparently they've solved the heat issues, needing only two (three?) fans to cool it. Compare that to the G5's16, and I'd say this thing runs pretty cold.

I don't know about you, but I only counted 10 in my Gen 1 Dual 2Gig G5. Are there 16 in the new Gen 2 ones?

For one, as you can see from the Video, and from others that have seen it in operation. it is not vaporware. They are in production, just being delayed because of Chip delays. If it were Vaporware we would have only seen an empty box with some video pumped into it from a G5 somewhere off stage...

I assume mine has a tenth because of the Second Processor.

They took my BTO order at 6:30 this morning and estimated 3-4 weeks shipping time. Based on all other Apple orders I have placed they have beat their projected time frame so I expect a ship date just after the 15th.

Order later in the day and it's going to add a few weeks.

Ponder it for week or two and you'll be lucky to get it before Christmas.

I believe that this is going to be as hot as the iPod mini and will have the same back order levels until after Christmas.

i don't like the looks of it, a real ho-hummer compared to previous imac designs. any other box maker could turned out the same design or (and probably) better. there is nothing to distinguish from any other commodity-box. forget switchers.

what a disappointment. if this took any r&d $$ apple wasted its money. i'll buy an ibook or 12" pb.

[addendum] for me the real dealbreaker is no more free-swivel screen, easily the coolest feature and most appreciated about the g4. "center of gravity," "tilts from 25º to -5º." so f***ing what!!

i submit this iteration as prima facie evidence that steve is bored w. the imac and wants to move on.

If you can't see why it's an impressive technical feat that Apple stuck a G5 on the back of a 20" monitor while keeping it just over 2" thick and pricing it at under $2000, you're missing something.

technical feats don't impress consumers. sure they're happy to have a technical feat as long as it looks really cool, sweet, tight, and grabs their attention from 30 ft. away.

as to thickness, please tell me how many times you think you'll get up to peer at the side of a 2" screen and your heart will flutter?

another, and i think acid test. gather 5 or more 8- to 14-year-olds in a room. put an imac g4 and g5 side-by-side and ask them which they like better. add a vaiao & a dell and ask again. i'll bet you won't have the response you'd want. if they tell their parents they want a new computer, d'you think the g5 will be at the top of their wish list, even if they want a new mac. again, i think you'll be disappointed.

one final carp: the front face is also a dreadful aesthetic lapse. until the promo copy told me it evoked the ipod, i wouldn't have guessed. when i did look again i really creeped out. it now looked like a monster ipod face with it's body chopped off below the chest. no blood on the floor, but might as well have been -- would've been more interesting.

Oh I do think the thickness will be an attention getter. The three people I've shown it to this morning have all said "S**T! Thats thin! Where the hecks the rest of it?" And they didnt even know how thick it actually was! They thought it was like 5'' or 6'' thick!

With the power cord being the exception. Looks impressive in these displays, but put a plug in every port it'l look like a wire wort hog. JLeno with dredlocks. May cause bed wetting with small children.

You can't beat the G4 iMac with the swivel LCD, and Apple may not ever be able to beat that design.

The problem with the flower iMac was that it was too......feminine and.....soft. Much like the original fruity iBook, the 3G iMac just looked too unprofessional to fill an office with them. Just like how many refuse to drive a sensible car like the Camry when it fills their needs perfectly (Does not apply to anyone who actually uses their vehicles to the fullest), a business that does not need the proccesing power of a G5 and therefore cannot justify the cost of a G5 many times wouldnt buy the iMac beacuse of its looks. Now that it looks beefier and more like a computer and less like a desk lamp, many of them will give it another look.
