Apple Denies Major G5 iMac Push at iPod Users

Apple Expo - Apple Denies Major G5 iMac Push at iPod Users

by , 9:00 AM EDT, September 1st, 2004

PARIS, FRANCE - Despite Apple's efforts to show the fine lines and design traits between the iPod and the new iMac G5, Apple executives are denying any official marketing campaign is afoot to entice iPod users to buy the new slim line Mac.

In announcing the new iMac G5 Tuesday, Apple touted the similarities in style and design between the two products. "From the creators of iPod. The new iMac G5," Apple's homepage said, showing side views of the iPod and iMac. While it appears on the surface that Apple is hoping its cross-platform success of the iPod will result in converting Windows users, a company executive told The Mac Observer it is not what it appears to be.

"We think it's incredibly obvious what the traits are between the two products," said Tom Boger, Apple's director of worldwide product marketing. "They both have similar traits of elegance and simplicity. We're simply pointing out that the inspirations that lead to the iPod are the same inspirations we used to create the new iMac."

Mr. Boger said there is not a major marketing campaign in the works to go after iPod users using Windows PCs to get them to buy the G5 iMac, but that "we certainly won't turn down their business."

Mr. Boger emphasized that Apple products have always had a higher standard of design and functionality than Windows PCs, and that there is nothing wrong in playing up that fact.

While denying the marketing tie-in is a way to sell the iMac G5 to iPod users, a number of marketing tools from Apple clearly reference the similarities. Apple's promotional video for the new iMac is full of iPod references and moves through subliminal shots of both products comparing their look. One video shot fades from the fourth-generation iPod's click wheel into the power cord ring of the new iMac.

In addition to its home page, Apple's Web site also has various references to the two products, including one that reads, "What if you could fit your whole life -- all your music, all your photos, all your movies, all your e-mail -- in a computer as fun and useful as an iPod? Now you can. Introducing the futuristic iMac G5 in 17- and 20-inch widescreen models."

Banners in Apple's booth at Paris Expo also show the two products side-by-side.

Despite a denial to product ties, industry watchers apparently don't believe Apple. "It's no accident," Stephen Baker, an analyst with NPD Group Inc. told The Washington Post "This is a case of the tail wagging the dog -- sales of the iMac are being driven by the iPod."

Since when is it newsworthy that a company tries to influence the sales of one product with another?

It's called the "Parlay" and its how MSFT got to where it is and why Apple (Who didnt do it) is number two. This is a brilliant tactic. Go read Daring Fireball's essay "The Art of Parlay" at http://daringfireball.net/2004/08/parlay

Damn straight. And a big fat DUH.

What do they expect, a disclaimer when you buy a PC iPod that they promise they will not attempt to sell you an iMac at any point in the future?

The iPod is a platform independent product and if Apple is interested in bringing major players like HP on board for strategic partnerships to benefit iPod sales Apple can not give the impression its ready to invade the PC world with an agressive promotion linking the iPod to iMac sales.

No one will deny Apple will directly benefit by a pick-up in CPU sales from the popularity of the iPod. It's already happening especially on college campuses.

Showing the design similarities between the iPod and iMac is more than OK. But the success of the iPod depends on industry-wide support for the popular cross-platform Apple product.

Who has denied this?

The statement above says they don't have a major marketing campaign planned...

It's clear that Apple is linking the two together. And rightfully so. It's a smart thing to do. And what's so wrong with it? Any insightful business would try to leverage the success of one product to boost others. I would not fault them for that.

In your quotes, they don't deny anything! Can someone point me to an official quote from an Apple representative that DOES deny the link?

Is this article as inappropriately titled as it seems to me?

Thanks for the link to MacMinute's story. Like many sites around the Mac web, both this story and MacMinutes are talking about Apple's use of the iPod as part of the marketing strategy for the new iMac.

I disagree with your assessment that this is simply a copy of MacMinutes' coverage. For one, this story is more in depth and has a different spin on the material. I assume that the source of both stories is press releases from Apple, with quotes and background. I would bet dollars to donuts that the word for word similarities in the two articles are contained entirely to the boilerplate supplied by Apple.

Now. Take a deep breath. Hold it. Now exhale slowly.

Feel better?

All people will see is the 'i' prefix, and the background in 'iPod 4G blue' (See http://images.apple.com/uk/hardware/images/ipod07192004.gif and http://images.apple.com/uk/hardware/images/imac20040831.gif for an example...)
And the iMac ads in Paris are suspiciously similar to the iPod ones, with the black Apple logo in the top right and the white lettering.

Subject: We never blame Microsoft!

Microsoft is responsible for every dirty trick in the book when it comes to pushing their filth to the mass markets but we drink it in without so much as a "wait a minute . . ."

When Apple come up with a sound marketing tactic to help increase awareness of their obvious superiority, and yes, I'll say it, SELL MORE UNITS, we jump all over them!

The world would be a better, more peaceful and joyful and stress-free place if windows users used macs. I for one second any method/tactic/strategy, call it what you will, that results in more macs on more desktops.

The difference is Apple is doing it the way it should, if being a bit coy about it; while MS often does it in an under-handed, shady way that often sells users short!
