iTunes Offers Republican Speeches, RNC Promotes iPod

iTunes Offers Republican Speeches, RNC Promotes iPod

by , 1:05 AM EDT, September 3rd, 2004

Just as with the Democratic National Convention last month, Apple is offering free downloads of speeches from the Republican National Convention (RNC) through the iTunes Music Store. For its part, the RNC's Web site is promoting not only the iTunes Music Store, but iPods for people who might be interested in listening to speeches from the Republican convention.

On the RNC's schedule Web page, you'll find the following:

Next to the iTunes window is the logo for Windows Media Player, which is more or less getting equal time with iTunes, though the latter is in front.

On the home page for the iTunes Music Store (iTMS), Apple has placed an ad linking to featured RNC's speeches.

Apple did the same thing for the Democratic National Convention in July, which prompted some Observers to ask if the company was playing political favorites. These questions were prompted in part because former Democratic Vice President Al Gore serves on Apple's board of directors. At the time, TMO confirmed with Apple that the company would be offering speeches from the Republicans, which has been born out by the presence of the RNC speeches on the iTMS.

The speeches are free to download from the iTMS.

Thanks to Observer Robert Lloyd for the heads up on the RNC's promo.

I hope this does indeed put to rest concerns Apple was playing political favorites when it offered speeches from the DNC in July.

The fact that the RNC has an iPod in a picture on its site shows yet again how much the iPod has found its way into our culture.

It very well does. And if anyone was to blame for supposed political agendas, it would be Audible.com, not Apple.

Way to go, Apple. After all, iPods and all Apple products reach out to both sides of the political divide (or is it the other way around?)

There does seem to be one glaring omission: George W. Bush.

I had heard that his people kept a tight grip on media regarding GWB, but this is ridiculous.

(FYI, the George P. Bush they do offer isn't a typo, it's the President's nephew.)

It takes time for the speeches to be made "Audible ready". iTMS gets the speeches through Audible.com. Most likely the president's speech will be available in a day or two.

Yes they have Zell, Dick Cheney too. It will probably be tommorow or next week for Bush, it takes time.

President Bush's speech is now available on iTMS and the convention coverage is linked on the iTMS home page.
