Motley Fool: Viruses, iPod Could Attract Some Switchers To Mac

by , 7:00 AM EDT, September 21st, 2004

In a collection of notes on different stock sectors, Alyce Lomax wrote for The Motley Fool that a combination of Windows viruses and security problems and Apple's iPod could attract some Windows Switchers to the Mac platform. This thought was put forward in the context of Apple being as much of a threat to Microsoft as everyone thinks that the open source community is. From The Motley Fool:

Although there are indications that the open-source movement has become a thorn in mighty Microsoft's side, other variables are at work that could pose some trouble. For one, frustrations with frequent security problems have made switching to an alternative, such as Linux or Apple, more compelling for some. Plus, it's not hard to imagine that Apple's popular iPod might increase the appeal of Macintosh computers for the young -- or young at heart.

You can find more information in the full article at The Motley Fool's Web site. Most of the article deals with other issues that might affect Microsoft's stock.

The Mac Observer Spin:

By no means is this little tidbit some sort of deep, researched revelation. We just think its very interesting when a tech watcher starts commenting in a mainstream financial media outlet like The Motley Fool something that we have long thought, which is that Linux isn't a threat to the Mac platform, but that Linux and the Mac platform are a threat to Windows.

Because Linux is actually owned by Apple, Reality Check. Didn't you know that?

Time for more Ritalin, RC. In a past article, it was stated that when we selected our hosting service, a Mac OS X solution wasn't available. If we had to start from scratch today, a Mac OS X solution would be a great choice. Then we could run a fast, stable OS on inexpensive Mac server-class hardware.

Haha everybody knows that OS X is a threat to Linux. Why would someone choose a version of Unix with an inferior UI, less hardware support, and less software choices? The answer is obvious. And given RC's demonstrated pro-Linux stance, his overall motivations for being anti-Mac are rather easy to figure out.

Why is it that there are thirty "Switch to Mac" articles every day, and no one says a word; yet when one person says Apple is dying, it gets a ton of coverage?

I read the Motley Fool article and founf it's "Quote of Note" a rather fitting answer to your question.

The proof will be in the September results. The Xserve is gaining new cusomters in the enterprise space.

But something else to consider: The G5 iMac makes for a powerful server solution for small businesses. Watch for a pick-up in G5 iMac sales by small enterprises that would prefer to save on hardware costs versus the costs of expensive Dell servers.

This must be a record - RC, 163 posts since May 2004 - and all of them full of crap. Must really be a Mac fanboy in denial to have such a fervent hatred of an object.

As evidenced above and similar to the way a cow chews its own cud, forum trolls take in source data such as news reports and spit it back out in unrecognizable forms that are unseemly to the viewer.

Please ignore the trolls. They thrive only on their own regurgitation. Like cows produce the polluting gas methane as the regurgitated food passes out of their system, the product of a troll’s regurgitation is at least equally unpleasant and surpasses the impact of a cow’s gas production in polluting the environment.
