TiVo Lovers Can Earn A Free iPod

TiVo Lovers Can Earn A Free iPod

by , 2:00 PM EDT, September 23rd, 2004

This may seems like the iPod giveaway day, but we have yet another company offering free iPods to its member customers. The very popular TiVo service has launched a rewards program, and one of the top level rewards is a 20 GB iPod, complete with the TiVo logo etched onto the back.

TiVo is a digital video recorder that allows you to easily record and manage TV programs. The company's new rewards program is called TiVo Rewards, and you can earn points in the program two ways. One is by referring a friend, which earns 5,000 points for each friend, and the other is by using the company's TiVo MasterCard credit card. The iPod costs 20,000 points. From TiVo's description:

Because your music collection can't always come with you. When you don't have access to your home theater sound system and the TiVo Digital Music Player, there's the Apple iPod. A musical dream come true, iPod continues to define the perfect portable digital music player for Mac and Windows with the ability to easily slip up to 5,000 songs into your pocket. And enjoy it wherever you go. In the car. On the treadmill. At the office. At work (did we say that?). Offering up to 12 hours of battery life. Weighing in at just 5.6 ounces. Use it with Mac OS X or Windows 2000/XP. Shuffle songs in the main menu. Comes with: Apple Earphones, AC Adapter, FireWire cable, and USB 2.0 cable. This is the latest and greatest iPod - the 4th generation iPod. Plus, the TiVo logo is etched on back!

Other rewards include a "limited edition remote" (3,500 points), a wireless modem jack (7,000 points), a "transfer product lifetime service" (20,000 points), and a new 140 hour Series 2 TV unit (25,000 points). You can find the full list of rewards at TiVo's Web site, as well as the main TiVo Rewards Web page.

The Mac Observer Spin:

This is simply yet another example of how much the iPod has become a cultural icon. Companies are bending over backwards to give the music players away to entice people to sign up, or in this case, to get others to sign up. By doing so, they are adding to the message that the iPod is the device to have.

Tivo is great. That is all. They're the apple of the dvr space. There's a few things that they need to get right, but for the most part, they are an absolutely amazing service.

ReplayTV.. bleh.

This is even easier than the "free ipods" phenomenon (see http://www.freestuffwatch.com/ ). Forget the credit card, I bet I can get my folks to sign up for TiVo under me no problem. Then I just need to find a few more...
