Microsoft Ships Virtual PC 7

TMO Reports - Microsoft Ships Virtual PC 7

by , 7:00 AM EDT, October 5th, 2004

Microsoft Corp. announced Tuesday it has started shipping long-waited Virtual PC 7, the newest version of the company's PC emulation software.

The products release has been delayed numerous times over the last year. Tuesday's announcement follows through on a promise made in July that it would ship VPC 7 in early October after the release of the Windows XP Service Pack 2, which shipped in late August.

In May of this year, Microsoft further delayed VPC7s release from the first half of this year until the second half due to what it called longer-than-expected development and testing.

Among the many new features, include a 10% to 30% boost in performance, support for Apple's Power Mac G5, better graphics handling, expanded preferences, one-click Fast Save to shut down Virtual PC, share folders and removable media, zero configuration printing, and more.

Virtual PC 7 is available for US$249. It is also available as part of Microsoft Office 2004 Professional Edition for $499. An upgrade version of Office 2004 Professional Edition is also available for $329.

Microsoft said other editions of Virtual PC 7, including Windows XP Home Edition, Windows 2000 Professional, Standalone and Upgrade, will be available in the next few months.

Der! But I'm willing to let that one slide for a while considering it means backwards compatibility for my XBox 2!

VPC 7 includes G5 compatibility and that is what is important for those that have PMs or the new iMacs.

Something get stripped out? Gee, what a surprise considering it comes from MS. Look at what is getting stripped out of Longhorn.

RC, I'm sure you'll be very happy with your $399 Dull. I'll stick with my Macs.

Actually, Reality Check is right this time - you wouldn't need to get a new Dell, but a low end PC could do a better job than VPC, if you have the room to have an ugly PC taking up space.

Shame on Microsoft for not targeting the "living in parent's basement" and "plays computer games all day" demographic.

how fast RC's $399 computer will run Longhorn.

Why is it that each new version of OS X runs faster, even on older Macs, while each new version of Windows (when there is a star in the east) runs slower? All Longhorn will need to match the speed of Tiger on a 1 gig Mac will be a 4 to 5 gig processor. I'm sure that will cost $399.

It's probably worth pointing out that if you're looking for either price OR performance... you're really not looking to run an emulated OS on top of another platform, period, no matter which platforms you're running or emulating. It's a convenience, which some people have real needs for, and are willing to live with those trade-offs to get (being able to carry one computer around, and still be able to run software for various platforms, for example).

but then again, the last thing to come from redmond that works is their ability to create apes out of men... that and win3.1-- that was a decent os...
