Retrospect-Maker Dantz in Takeover Talks

Back-up software maker Dantz Development Corp. may be sold to EMC Corporation, a published report said Friday. Whether or not EMC would want to continue selling Dantz's Mac product line if it buys the company is unknown.

EMC vice president Victoria Grey told SearchStorage.com, "we are in discussions with Dantz about an acquisition. Dantz has complementary technology to our product set and additional channel strength in the SMB market."

EMC focuses on information storage systems, software, networks and services. Dantz, which publishes Retrospect, has a strong presence in the small to medium-sized storage market. The acquisition is thought to be an attempt by EMC to raise its profile in that market.

Dantz has not commented on the report.

Whether or not EMC would want to hold on to all of the Dantz products - including its Macintosh product line - is not known. EMC does not offer any Mac-related products or services at this time. For Mac users, Dantz makes Retrospect Desktop, Retrospect Server, and Retrospect Workgroup.
