Ok, I've had some time to think. I've reached these conclusions:

1) It IS a real product.

2) It is NOT a real sock. It is iPod sized, and iPod shaped. It is only for keeping your iPod warm.

3) Why do iPods need to be kept warm? Don't they warm themselves when on? Don't people keep them in their coat pockets anyway? Who knows why this exists?

4) Isn't this the same as putting a little sweater on a tiny dog? Isn't that stupid?


Anyway, it's actually really funny, 'cause last year my wife took a design class where they had to create packaging. She made a clear plastic box that came with (actual) socks inside. The design of the box was what mattered for the class, not the fact that selling socks in a box is not really a great marketing idea...but NOW this! Her teacher only thought her sock box was "ok" but now, a year later, Steve Jobs did the same thing!

She ought'a go back and find that teacher and tell him he was behind the times...she should've gotten an A!

That aside, this is an odd, odd product.

OK, people will buy this for their iPod toting friends and family as holiday gifts because it's at the perfect price point (<$30) and it is NON-technical and goes with everyone's iPods. No brainer. Apple will sell millions of 'em!

EXCEPT...

1. No white? Guess that's too boring and too much like, well, gym socks.

2. What's with that 6th color?!!! A hint of a new royal blue/purple iPod yet to come?

My girlfriend is ahead of the curve - she knit me an iPod sock last winter. Seriously. Multicolored, too, though in stripes.

I've carried my iPod in a cut-off sock since getting my first iPod 2 1/2 years ago (and carry my 4G in the same sock today).

I am not yet an iPod owner so I lack the hands on experience to make sense of the sock. But Googling "ipod sock" reveals a guy named "Maneesh Sethi" sold an "iPod SuperCase" made from a sock on eBay several months ago. I still don't get the usefulness -

One reason you might want to keep your iPod warm is that batteries tend to lose capacity when really cold. However, I would think that the little belt clip current iPods come with should be adequate for keeping an iPod warm enough to retain full capacity.

My Ipod, especially my old one, the touch wheel always worked better when my it was cold, like when i left it out in my car.... This is the most retarded thing I have ever seen and I can't wait till I see someone who has bought one so that I can kick them in the Nutz

it's a great idea for those who don't want their ipod scraped up by the loose change or keys in their pockets. it's also warmed by the ipod, making it something comfortable to grab onto while freezing at a bus station.

This doesn't have any opening to access the wheel, and you have to pull the iPod out of the sock to see the screen. Lots of opportunities to drop your iPod.

This is a joke... and not even a reasonably priced joke. Anyone who wastes money on this one should lose their spending privileges.

I've been knitting iPod cozies (socks) for awhile now. Complete with customized buttons and decorations. One has a removable shoulder strap (knitted). So, what's new about this idea?

No they don't. Ask any photographer how quickly his camera stops working when shooting in freezing temperatures. It's common practice for photographers to keep their spare batteries warm and switch batteries frequently when shooting in extreme cold.

This will avoid feeling it cold, but it won't keep it warm (unless it's on and generating enough heat on its own). Wool insulates, but it doesn't heat up.

wow you guys are really dumb. it was a complete gag. jobs mentioned it as a tongue-in-cheek joke to lighten the mood of the presentation. there is no need to keep an ipod warm. WOW.

Think about it- the only reason socks keep your feet warm is 'cos there's lots of nice warm blood being pumped down there.
Your socks simply insulate your feet.

With no heat coming FROM the iPod- insulation will do no good whatsoever, apart from a slight slowdown in the cooling caused when you take your iPod from a nice warm room into the cold outdoors.

these are really stupid, if anything they will keep your ipod extremely bright so when you lose it it will stand out, I guess u could write ur name on the sock so people kno whos ipod it is... JUST TAKE A FRICKEN SOCK YOU ALREADY HAVE AND STICK IT OVER THE iPOD!!!! IT WORKS JUST AS GOOD FOR A SMALLER PRICE!!!! the price is ridiculous, I think apple has truly lost it with their prices!!!! They have been selling these on ebay for quite a while. Not an official apple product but it was someones idea. I would like to see some for iBooks.
