BusinessWeek: Steve Jobs, The Great Innovator

by , 3:30 PM EDT, October 27th, 2004

BusinessWeek has named Apple CEO Steve Jobs one of its "Great Innovators" as part of a weekly series the business magazine is running on people who have innovated in technology, management, finance, marketing, or government. This week's installment features Mr. Jobs as a tech innovator based on his success in founding Apple, resurrecting Apple, and running Pixar. From the article:

Jobs's contribution? More than anyone else, he brought digital technology to the masses. As a visionary, he saw that computers could be much more than drab productivity tools. Instead, they could help unleash human creativity and sheer enjoyment. A marketing genius, he conceived of elegant products that captured consumers' imaginations. And as a relentless perfectionist, he came up with creations that actually delivered on their promise -- raising the bar for rivals. "From the time he was a kid, Steve thought his products could change the world," says Lee Clow, chairman of TBWA/Chiat/Day and Jobs' longtime ad man.

Other people so honored as Great Innovators include Jack Welch, former CEO of GE, venture capitalists Robert Swanson and Herbert Boyer, Holiday Inn founder Kemmons Wilson, and Elvis Presley. You can see the full list at BusinessWeek's Great Innovators home page.

The Mac Observer Spin:

Steve Jobs pretty much has a blank check to do anything he wants right now. He is getting a lot of credit for the goings on at both Apple and Pixar, and the mainstream media that was once so critical of Apple is now bending over backwards to say as many nice things about the company as it can. Indeed, you pretty much have to look at the lunatic fringe to find anything to complain about when it comes to Apple these days.

Yup. one of the windooze using "I will never own an Apple" lemmings has changed her tune compeletely. Grandma saw the Photo iPod and immediately let everyone know it was number one on her Christmas gift lists. God help the next person who asks her if she has pictures of the grandkids.

Apple just may have a real stealthy product here. Album art in color? No way grandparents with lots of grandkids. Way. I expect we'll even succeed in getting her to listen to music once she has it.

Just maybe the eleves in Cupertino know more than the rest of us?
