Google Plugs Gmail Security Hole

Google Plugs Gmail Security Hole

by , 5:00 AM EST, November 1st, 2004

Google, Inc. has fixed a security flaw its Gmail Web-based e-mail service that could let hackers hijack e-mail accounts, the company has announced. The company did not reveal details of the vulnerability, but acknowledged it was possible to take complete control of another person's account.

Israel's Nana NetLife Magazine exposed the flaw last week, that allowed a user's cookie file, which identifies a particular user, to stolen. This cookie could then be installed on another machine, providing access to the user's account without having to enter a password.

A Google spokesperson said a small number of people had reported their accounts had been compromised.
