iPod Mini Cell Phone? Only In Your Dreams

iPod Mini Cell Phone? Only In Your Dreams

by , 1:45 AM EST, November 4th, 2004

What would you get if you cross an iPod mini with a cell phone add-on module? Quite possibly Applele's hiPod R2. From the mind of Isamu Sanada, a Japanese designer who has conjured up more imaginary Apple products than you can shake lamp-shade iMac at, comes this tasty creation that's almost impossible to imagine wouldn't be a hit if Apple ever managed to bring such a product to market.

i own the 20gig ipod, but for a ipod mini cell enabeled device it'd ditch my bigger ipod...

what a cool idea, but it should be an ad on, no build in, not removable....

very nice

I have mixed feelings about this mock-up. Firstly I want one. I've just bought a new sony erricson phone but I'd swap it for an add on to my ipod mini tomorrow if I could. The downside is that now he's published these pictures it puts Apple into a difficult position if they ever were to do this. It would have to be Apple rather than a third party as it would require a software change and an internal aerial. This would make sense - much like the imacs coming 'airport ready' with an aerial built in even though they may not have the airport card.

How do I go about lobbying Apple to make this? Anyone else interested?

His site is more than amusing - this guy is good. Lots of well-reasoned ideas with rather elegant presentations - not just flights of fancy, IMHO.

Well I have to say, having it be an add-on thing like that is the best attempt I've seen at an iPod phone yet. I could support that.

I think making the iPod have a phone in it is a terrible idea, but if something like this existed, it would let people who want it build their own without messing up the iPod for the rest of us.

I DO like concept sites, though. Always fun to imagine! There's a lot more here:

A cool concept.

I recall reading somewhere that it is an open secret that Apple is working on how to put wireless capabilities into the iPod. If they can do it neatly, I might consider buying one of this add-on.

Btw, I prefer the phone functionality as an add-on rather than a built-in.

Wonder anyone can come up with a concept add-on that transform the iPod into a video camera?

What I want to know is why Apple, hasn't just made a cable adapter and a firmware patch, that would allow people to connect their iPod to a DV cam, as a storage device. When the iSight first came out, I was waiting on Apple to announce a way to mount it to an iPod, and use the combo as a DV cam. With the regular LCD, it would have been a bit cheesey, but with the iPod Photo...

Although beautifully drawn, it appears that the antennae is embedded within the add-on cell phone module, and consequently, being at the bottom of the phone, is most likely to be blocked by the hand holding the phone, thereby impacting reception. Apple implementations are beautiful both visually and technically.

(Yes, I'm probably taking this too seriously, but it was fun!)

Do you have to hold the iPod up to your mouth?

Good point, AFC. It means that still need the flash memory element in camera to act as a buffer and regularly download to the iPod.

if an ipod phone scratches as easily as the ipod photo does, i would have to replace it every 2 weeks.

do you really think they would make that? if so when? and will it come out for the mini, since the new nano is out?
