NSA Releases Guide for Securing and Configuring Mac OS X

by , 2:20 PM EST, November 4th, 2004

The National Security Agency has published a new guide on configuring and securing Mac OS X 10.3. The 109-page unclassified document is available as a free download and covers such topics as installing and configuring the initial OS, configuring and securing user accounts, and encrypting files and folders.

The document, noted by Government Computer News, is new despite the April 1 date reflected on the NSA's page.

In other news, the NSA has published a pamphlet describing how to secure Windows. In it are five words: Ha, Ha. You're kidding right?

Very funny, guest.

What services should and shouldn't you enable? Do any of them have special features? How secure is personal file sharing? What happens when someone pulls out the existing HD and mounts it in their computer? In case you didn't notice, out of the box Mac OS X boots straight the primary user's account (no login), which NOT good enough for the NSA.

There's good enough, and there's "really secure". Most BSD systems install to the first out of the box, but there's a way to go to reach the second, and a lot of it involves user and sysop education about exactly how the system works. 90% of the document is probably common sense to a computer security expert, but not everyone in the NSA or a subcontractor for the NSA would fit that description.

These are the folks who brought us SELinux - one of the most secure builds I have ever seen. If they have some advice on a top down rehash of configuring OS X - it is definitely worth a read.

At least we get a little benefit from our tax dollars.. ;>)
