Apple has posted iPod Updater 2004-11-15 (also available via Software Update), which includes iPod mini Software 1.2 and iPod Software 3.0.2. With version 1.2, iPod minis gain many of the features found in 4G iPods, including the ability to:
- Shuffle and play song library with one click
- Create multiple On-The-Go playlists
- Delete songs from On-The-Go playlists
- Select reading playback speed for audiobooks
- Hear Click Wheel clicker through headphones
- Sync and go with improved disconnect performance

When will they update the functionality of the 3rd Gen iPods? I want to edit on-the-go play lists. I want the party shuffle on my Pod. I want improved disconnect performance. I don't want to buy a new iPod to do it, mine is still under the 1 year warranty!
:jealous:
I'm right there with you. Mine may be 3rd gen, but it's still "almost new". How about a little help here Apple?

As far as regular iPods are concerned, isn't this just a scheme to defeat iPodDownload, Real's Harmony, etc.?
Are there any actual new *features* besides trying to put a tighter lock on your iPod?
Depends upon which iPod you have and whether you've installed prior updates. This update (and, if I recall correctly, the last update) adds nothing to the 3G iPod over previous updates.
I agree about the 3G ipods getting the added functionality. There is nothing barring Apple from adding those things to the 3G iPods besides profit from the 4G iPods.
Mine is as well under the one year warranty, as I bought it in February of this year. Just a few short months later (might of been weeks, not sure as I was in the hospital at the time) the 4G come out.
Happens.
But the editing of on-the-go playlists and party shuffle should be able to be added to the 3G no problem.

Glad to know you're privy to the inner workings of the iPod and the ease with which Apple can update the abilities of the older generations. Maybe they should update the battery life while they're at it.
