Endicia Shows First Mac Software-Only Internet Postage Product
TMO at MWSF - Endicia Shows First Mac Software-Only Internet Postage Product
by , 2:05 PM EST, January 13th, 2005
SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- Envelope Manager Software announced the availability of Endicia for Mac 1.0 Internet Postage service at this week's Macworld Expo show.
For the uninitiated, Internet Postage allows one to simply print a label and apply it to a mailpiece, rather than having to mess around with stamps or a postage meter. Although there are a number of companies that offer Internet postage on the Windows platform, Envelope Manager Software is the first company to offer an "open" product for the Mac platform. By "open" we mean that you don't have to print on special, often expensive, stock, which prior Mac offerings required.

Preview of a Priority Mail Label
Endicia for Mac sports many useful features. One can print postage for both Domestic and International destinations. Delivery Confirmation is free for Priority Mail, and discounted for Package Services. Users get the convenience of automatic shipment notification e-mails and 1-click status checks on all their packages. Shipping labels which do not show the postage amount (the value is hidden in the barcode) are also supported.
Endicia for Mac 1.0 offers a 30-day free trial, where you just pay for postage. After that, the service is US$15.95 a month, or $174.95 a year.
The Mac Observer Spin:
Although Internet Postage never took off like many expected, perhaps this is becasue the only options were on the PC side of the fence. We'll have to see if the Mac's ease of use can help make Internet Postage services more popular.Observer Comments

Per use would be the way to go. I would seriously look at getting it if that be the case. I hate stopping buy the post office for stamps. But...
I really can't justify the "every month" charge. It's really not that much, but then I only use one book of stamps a month. So the value for me isn't there. Maybe if I send more letters, but right now thanks but no thanks.
(I'm glad to see a company has taken it upon themselves to offer a viable postage system for the Mac.)
They should just sell the software outright, or have a very small 1-2 cent per use charge. You can send nearly 40 letters for the price of their monthly charge alone and that still doesn't include the postage. And Word will do barcoded addresses. I think even Address Book will. No thanks. I'll keep picking up a book of stamps at the store or the atm... I'd pay $40 for the program, but will never use it with a per month charge..
My monthly personal mailing is minimal thanks to the bank's online billpay. While my business snail mail is more than the personal, the combined still does not come close to the monthly charge for this product. Like others, I'd be willing to purchase a license for the program plus a per use charge. This makes financial sense to most users. This vendor seems intent on killing the product before it is even released with this pricing. Hope the software is better than their appraisal of the mac user's IQs.
