The First Macintosh Stevenote Movie: Happy 21st Birthday, Macintosh!

The First Macintosh Stevenote Movie: Happy 21st Birthday, Macintosh!

by , 12:50 PM EST, January 24th, 2005

Happy birthday, Macintosh! To celebrate, we're going to bring out some embarrassing home movies, like the very first Macintosh Stevenote ever. German site Mac Essentials has posted the video of Steve Jobs publicly unveiling the Macintosh on January 24th, 1984.

For those keeping score, that was the date that Apple told us was why the year 1984 wouldn't be like 1984, but this video shouldn't be confused with the famous commercial to that effect. This is the actual unveiling of the Mac, including the then-incredible windowing interface that set the Mac apart from everything else on the market.

A screen shot from the video:

Macintosh: Insanely Great!

You can download the video, and see cartoon strip about it (in German) at Mac Essentials.

John F. Braun assisted with this story, and thanks to MetaFilter for finding the video.

I've just finished reading Andy Hertzfeld's book (which is heartily recommended) and the words in the book do not do justice to this event like the video does.

I thought the recent Stevenotes were cool... I can't believe how jacked the crowd was when the Mac introduced Steve. Sent shivers up my spine. Very cool.

It's awesome to see the intro.
The timing is great with the scrolling text.

I thought I'd look at the 1984 ad as well - does the apple chick have an ipod on her hip? :-O
It can be seen well when she throws the hammer.
Talk about looking into the future!

She does in the current versions you can find on the web. It was digitally inserted for the January 24, 2004 20th birthday revision.
