Creative CEO: Apple will Lose to Microsoft
Creative CEO: Apple will Lose to Microsoft
by , 11:00 AM EST, February 14th, 2005
MSNBC has published a very interesting Newsweek interview with Creative Technologies CEO Sim Wong Hoo. The piece examines Creative's struggle in the iPod-dominated music player market.
When asked about the iPod's success, Mr. Sim says, "Steve Jobs is a personality that we all have to reckon with....But he was not the first to come out with this MP3 [sic]. We started way back in 1999." Asked about the iPod shuffle, Mr. Sim concludes, "I believe we had this kind of thing more than three years or four years ago. You can say it's cool; I say it's plain-Jane."
Perhaps the most interesting comment, though, concerns Creative's adoption of Microsoft's Windows Media Format. Mr. Sim says, "I'm betting on the Microsoft camp. They want to win this whole MP3 war. With all the cash they have, with all the clout they have, they are going to win—if not the first time, if not the second time, the third time, and that's why we're working very closely with them."
There is much more, including a discussion of portable video and the pros and cons of being based in Singapore, in the full interview, which recommend as a relevant piece.
The Mac Observer Spin:
With all due respect to Mr. Sim, he seems to be setting up for another losing battle against the iPod. In this spin section we've previously noted that Mr. Sim doesn't get why he lost the first battle: Mr. Sim believes he lost to Steve Jobs' "cult of personality" and the iPod's more successful branding effort. We believe, however, that he lost because of the iPod's seamless integration with iTunes. Clearly, Mr. Sim still has not learned that lesson. Whichever product of his he equates with the iPod shuffle certainly did not come paired with iTunes' powerful auto-playlist features, which is the real reason people find the shuffle so appealing.
As for Mr. Sim's comments on Microsoft, suffice it to say that the company with the most money doesn't always win, even if they "want to."
Observer Comments
It's not the name it's the service and ease of use. The integration that works for both PC and Mac. No other service out there works with both PC and Mac with the ease of use and integration. Everyone else went PC only with clunky web interfaces that only use IE6 to get into there service so your attacked with every pop up in the world immediately. Of course you can't run IE6 on the Mac because they don't make it. So hense there is no access for Macs with everyone else.
For GOD's sake, the word "lose" is the opposite of "win". "Loose" is the opposite of "tight". I'd call it a typo if it didn't appear twice -- in the story and even in the headline! This kind of error makes a terrific site like TMO look amateurish and bush league. Let's get some editorial oversight!

Just becaused MS has licensed wma doesn't make it open. It is a closed, proprietary format that is 100% controlled by MS.
mp3 is open, and a standard.
AAC is open, and a standard.

Mon Feb 14, 2005 1:40 pm Subject: Does the marketshare mantra apply when it favors Apple?
I think the marketshare Apple has of the portable digital music market gives them a great deal more clout in the direction that the DRMs are going than Microsoft or Creative. This could change, but when Apple is controling the hardware that digital music is played on, they can dictate the terms. This is one of the only times that Apple has had this kind of power over the market. As much as everyone might rave about competing products that will offer more to the end user, Apple is clearly winning the battle where product sales are concerned. I think the Shuffle will solidify it.
Granted, this also puts them in a similar position that Microsoft had with the operating system monopoly, and we can see the legal woes that has made for Microsoft. Apple is doing their best to keep the music industry happy, but it won't be long before they start feeling that Apple's system is bottlenecking their potential online sales. They will want the players to be able to purchase music from anywhere. This is the greatest danger to Apple at the moment. Not Microsoft, not Creative, not Sony, but the anti-trust lawyers who are lining up to claim the Apple is monopolizing an industry and unfairly cutting off outside competition.
BTW- I'm not really sure what is meant by 'the Mac failed'. That's a rather broad statement for a platform that is still around with such an active user base.
The amusing part of Podmania is watching how utterly and completely clueless so many respected CEO's are-- Glaser at Real; this guy; Ballmer. The other funny thing is-- it's just a MUSIC PLAYER; it's not like a core Apple competancy or anything. MY feeeling is that anything that gets people into Apple stores is great. The important thing is, and always has been, the Mac.

Who can tell us exactly how similar, other than the lack of an LCD display, Mr. Hoo's old flash mp3 players were to the iPod shuffle?
Let us count the ways:
- $99 price tag? nope.
- 1/2 and 1 gig capacity? nope.
- plays DRM downloads like from iTunes? nope
- plays Audible.com books?, nope
- High speed i/o like USB? nope.
- syncs automatically with iTunes on PC and Mac? nope.
- smaller than pack of gum? nope
- weighs less than 4 quarters? nope.
To paraphrase that famous rejoiner from the Quayle/Benson VP debate: "I knew President Kennedy [iPod shuffle] and you [Creative Labs mp3 player] are no Jack Kennedy."

But weren't you the one who was speaking out in favor of Napster's new service which is essentially music rental?
I smell an Apple hater.
People keep trying to equate Microsoft's success in the computer industry to their reasoning as to why Apple will lose the digital music player wars in the consumer electronics industry. Problem is, Microsoft rode on the back of IBM's coattails and on the R&D of Apple computer to get to where they are, they don't have that luxury in the home electronics market. In this industry they are just another two-bit player without much clout. Here they will have to stand on their own two legs and run with the rest of them.
It is in these situations that everyone will see the mighty Microsoft fail the most at and where a company like Apple can thrive through innovation.
This continuous comparison of the Macintosh market share to where the iPod is headed is absurd. Sure they will eventually lose market share, but my guess would be to other players that support the soon-to-become de facto standard FairPlay. By the time Apple hits a billion downloaded songs, there will be great pressure from the RIAA and the consumer electronics market to get Apple to license FairPlay.
the rest, as they say, will be history.
Guys, As a teacher I can vouch for this
When telling others of their errors be NICE.. people are more apt to fix them & go on... No need for cussing & yelling at the author for a mistake. (Probably caused by the crappy M$ Word Speel chucker anyway)
And on a note to the topic here: I have not used, or even seen, any other player than an iPod here, so have no direct experience but if they are, as said, any harder than an iPod to use I can see why the others will hacve to copy & pay for the iPod interface... or die.
WMA killer--- Actually I can see Apple licensing the iPod interface/OS before I can see them licensing WMA. That way they get $$ from others USING their stuff,, rather than paying M$ for it's software. THAT's the WMA killer.....

Of course, my personal pet peeve is the old chestnut, "I could care less." ARRRRGH!! that one drives me NUTS! It's "I COULDN'T care less" fer chrissakes! "I COULD care less" means that you *do* care--which is the exact opposite of the point of the saying!

yeah, m4a will lose to WMA just like the iPod lost to the Zen...
and just like how people dont actually want to own their music, but would rather rent at a monthly fee
lack fo ownership? jounds just like the M$ motto to me!

Aren't you talking crazy? Apparently you havne't opened your eyes recently or you are on crack. Zen? Who? Have you really used one or you are just commenting out from your behind? Do you know how difficult it is to USE that thing without reading through the user's manual? Talking about losing.. I guess your mind is almost gone!
And then you talked about not ownind music but renting instead? How ironic what you first talked about Zen and then you followed up with Napster?
Now if you were smart enough, do the math! Yes you pay $19 a month for napster. Once you stop paying for the subscription, EVERYTHING is gone. At least with the $19, I can OWN 19 songs!
Mon Feb 14, 2005 4:57 pm Subject: Q: Is Sim Wong Hoo...
Sorry, Reality Check, but Apple's closed proprietary iTunes-iPod system has already succeeded. Maybe selling over a million songs per day and absolutely crushing the competition is a sign that Apple's heading for disaster in your insane Bizarro world, but here in reality it means that they're heading for anything but failure.
I cannot believe how many people make words plural with "'s".
I have four DVDs. It's not "four DVD's". Five Macs, not "five Mac's".
It's KILLING me... even terms that are all caps just need an "s" at the end, people. All words that are plural have an "s", "es", or nothing (like sheep.)
No apostrophe.
Just the letter "s".
Argh... It means something when you have DVD's, it is possessive, NOT plural...
Ack!

You often see people confuse dominate for dominant also.
Another favorite of mine: stragety.
QuoteMr. Sim says, "I'm betting on the Microsoft camp. They want to win this whole MP3 war. With all the cash they have, with all the clout they have, they are going to win—if not the first time, if not the second time, the third time, and that's why we're working very closely with them."
Good for you, Mr Sim. It's not often a true lickspittle gets to become CEO of a significant enterprise...

As for the article, That CEO dude sounds desperate and bitter, and quite the ignoranus. Geez, I wonder what they pay him...
And to all you Apple nay sayers...
HAhahahhHAhh SHUT UP!!!
P.S. look at Apple stock performance. It reminds me a bit of Microshaft back in there rise to glory.
2004 won't be like 1984. A good read for those who think Apple is wrong not to license FairPlay.
To the complete moron who says "WHo cares?" about spelling ...
If everyone were as big an idiot as you, before long the entire human race would go back to grunting and throwing bits of food and turd at each other to communicate. The essense of language is precision -- a word has an agreed upon set of meanings, and if that word is spelled differently then it is a different word. Got it? Small differences in meaning are the difference between countries going to war, space shuttles blowing up, and other small things like that.
Do not feed the Troll.

How is Apple's Music "DRM infected" but WMA not?
That statement makes no sense whatsoever.
QuoteRealityCheck wrote:

Even you know that licensing a closed and proprietary technology doesn't make it open. What happens if Microsoft abandons WMA? Exactly the same thing as if Apple abandon Fairplay, except that the AAC encoding format is known, so it's more likely to be cracked.
[quote="RealityCheck"]iTunes will soon be joining Betamax as a closed proprietary format that flopped. At least Betamax had better quality than VHS,
Quote
While you can draw parallels between the beta and VHS wars (Matsushita licensed VHS agressively, while Sony tried to establish themselves as market leader) it's not so simple as beta=good VHS=bad.
Beta videos couldn't be retrospectively modified to support VHS (iPod firmware could support WMA)
Beta videos (as anyone who was actually around at the time would recall) had a playing time too short to contain some movies. So the format wasn't necessarily better if you wanted to watch movies.
[quote="RealityCheck"]too bad iTunes has lower quality than WMA and DRM-free music sites. iLemmings you've been snowed by Steve Jobs RDF again.
Care to provide a link to a double-blind test conducted by an independant laboratory that shows that WMA encoded audio is better than AAC?
I shouldn't have to remind you that the iPod is just as capable of downloading from these DRM-free sites you talk about.
The only person trying to do a snow job here is you. At least I can take comfort is knowing that being a Microsoft flunky, you're getting exactly what you deserve when you use your computer - No wonder you're so bitter.

That sentence should read "..an independent laboratory" as in independence day not independance day, declaration of independence not independance.

Look... I was in high school in Singapore in the early 90s when Creative Sound became THE de facto standard. Fast forward to 2005, Creative is still big in PC sound, just that when it comes to the iPod they got their ass kicked. He sounds bitter, and needs to eat some humble pie like Apple did when it was actively being written off mid-to-late 90s prior to iMac-flavourama.
In the interview he sounds defiant which is all like Bring It On! and all that but clearly he has failed to grasp concepts such as: [sleek, sexy, popular product design through a robust formula of minimalist flair] (i just made that up but that's my take on iPod success -- that minimalist flair includes iTunes, much better than any of the Creative JukeBox stuff i used to use on the PC....)
