Firefox, Safari Usage Rising Slightly, Report Shows (UPDATE)
by , 9:00 AM EST, February 28th, 2005
Global usage of the Web browser's Firefox and Safari have risen slightly in the past four months as Internet users find there are other options besides Micrsoft's Internet Explorer, Web analytics firm Onestat.com announced Monday.
The firm said that since November of last year, Firefox usage jumped 1.10% to 8.45% and Safari use increased 0.3% to 1.21%. For the same period, use of Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser declined slightly from 88.79% to 87.28%.
"It looks like that browser users of Internet Explorer 5 are switching to Mozilla Firefox instead of upgrading to Internet Explorer 6.0," said Niels Brinkman, co-founder of OneStat.com. "Safari usage is building, but it is a small, incremental increase. I would say this growth will continue over time, but you will not see dramatic increases," Mr. Brinkman told The Mac Observer.
Usage of the Web browser Opera was 1.09% in the latest survey, down from 1.29% in November, the company said.
Onestat.com's figures do not break out Web browser usage by computing platform and no longer divide browser usage by version number. Onestat.com's analysis tools are installed on more than 50,000 Web sites in 100 countries, the company said.

Firstly, Mac represented 2% of global PC market. So max is 2%.
Obviously, more Mac users decided to use Safari.
Internet browsers are old school. We are moving towards an era where connection to internet is in the background. So far, Apple had produced a few such applications:
- iTunes/iTMS
- Mail
- iChat
- iDisk
I'm looking forward for more such applications. Dashboard widget is a nice way to hide internet from us.
That is, no need to implement Safari for Windows.

I use Safari. I like Safari. But Safari was already getting lapped by Firefox a year ago. I know there's an update coming with Tiger, but seriously...Safari 1.X still seems like a Beta to me. A stable Beta, but a Beta nonetheless.
I also use Camino from time to time. Great browser. Can't wait for the first official release. Honestly, I think this is what Safari should be. Camino would be in a class by itself in the hands of Apple's interface designers.
And what is this Internet Explorer you speak of? I vaguely recall a dark day when I used such a thing, but it's all so hazy....

Not sure that number is valid for internet usage, even if it were true for computer sales (which is not necessarily the case, but that is a different discussion). I don't think anybody truly knows the Mac percentage of the global internet-using market. Webstats don't count, since many set the browser ID string to IE just to get past certain stubborn sites.

Amen. (Camino is already my default browser.)
