Linux Creator Switches to Mac, Sort Of

Linux Creator Switches to Mac, Sort Of

by , 1:30 PM EST, March 9th, 2005

Don't call it a Mac, because it runs Linux exclusively, but Linus Torvalds has switched to Apple hardware for his main desktop computer. The creator of the Linux operating system said in a Linux mailing list that he was no longer using an x86 (Intel processor) machine, and ZDNet's Australian branch took the opportunity to find out what he had switched to. The answer: A dual 2.5 GHz Power Mac G5.

"My main machine these days is a dual 2GHz G5 (aka PowerPC 970)," Mr. Torvalds told ZDNet. "It's physically a regular Apple Mac, although it obviously only runs Linux, so I don't think you can call it a Mac any more ;)"

The reason for the switch, he said, was that he decided the two most viable processor families on the market today are Intel's x86 line and the PowerPC family maintained independently by IBM and Motorola.

"As to the why ... Part of it is simply that I wanted to try something else, and I felt like there were enough people testing the x86 side that it certainly didn't need me. Part of it is that I personally believe there are two main architectures out there: Power and x86-64 are what _I_ think are the two most relevant ones, and I decided that I had to at least check the other side of it out seriously if I really believed that," said Mr. Torvalds.

Mr. Torvalds also went to pains to tell the publication that he didn't feel as if his opinion on the issue accounted for much, and that he is really just a "technology whore."

While that may be so, he remains the central figure of the open source Linux movement, and many people pay attention to what he says. If he decides he likes the Apple hardware he is using, and says so publicly, Apple could find itself with a few more buyers of its hardware.

This could be particularly true of Linux users interested in trying out Mac OS X, but who have so far resisted doing so, and it could certainly translate into more Xserves in server rooms.

There is additional information in the full story at ZDNet, which we recommend as an interesting read.

PowerPC architecture is worth his time to find out more. . Should Apple rollout Linux too?

Doesn't really matter... Torvalds isn't going to use anything unless he's actually interested in it.

Go hardware!

The article says dual 2.5ghz, but the quote just says 2ghz.....

Subject: Which distro?

I wonder which distribution he uses. I have dabbled in Linux, Suse PPC, then Yellow Dog. There are a few more PPC distros.

Apple does not need to do Linux, Terra Soft's Yellow Dog is all that is needed.

I have an original eMac 700MHz, and have yet to get X windows running under Linux. I have tried Yellow Dog, Mandrake, Knoppix and one or two others. The video card seems to be the hang up, but I can't be absolutely sure.

There is not much buzz.

I tried installing Yellow Dog 3.0 on my old 333 iMac and couldn't get it to finish the installation. That, I think, was more a function of the old CD-ROM drive than a slam on Yellow Dog, because I tried it on my 700 iBook and got it going the first time. Impressions? It's much uglier than OS 10.2, at least as fast if not faster, and comes with a ton of software, some of which is probably even useful if I knew what it did. I still have that iBook, although it's not in use, so I may reformat it and install both OSX and YDL and play it with some more.

It will be interesting to see what Torvalds thinks of the Power Mac. Like greybeard, I'm wondering what distro he's using.
