LuxPro Copies iPod shuffle with "Super Shuffle"

LuxPro Copies iPod shuffle with "Super Shuffle"

by , 3:25 PM EST, March 10th, 2005

A new flash-based digital music player called the Super Shuffle borrows more than just its name from Apple's iPod shuffle. Taiwanese manufacturer LuxPro designed the Super Shuffle to look almost exactly like the iPod shuffle, including the white plastic and white headphones, though the company did add both an FM radio tuner and voice recording capabilities to its unit.

The LuxPro Super Shuffle is slightly larger than the iPod shuffle (Super Shuffle tech specs, iPod shuffle tech specs), but features a control interface on the front that mimics Apple's control interface. According to images of the unit published by Engadget, which first broke the story, the Super Shuffle has additional buttons on the back of the device for switching functionality between the radio, music player, and voice recorder.

The LuxPro Super Shuffle

The Super Shuffle supports MP3 (8~320Kbps), MP3-VBR, WMA, WMA-DRM (5~192Kbps), WAV (ADPCM) music formats, and is works with both Mac OS X and several flavors of Windows. The device also features 12 hours of battery life, the same as the iPod shuffle.

Apple has a long history of protecting its design work, having successfully sued eMachines, FuturePower, and other PC manufacturers who attempted to imitate the original Bondi Blue iMac.

If this isn't a joke, Apple is bound to sue LuxPro for copying its iPod Shuffle design. Why a company would so closely copy the Shuffle design and then name their device a "Shuffle" too is beyond comprehension. It can't be legit.

No, but I was reading some comments on the page that broke the story and people there were talking about other companies that have done stuff like this.

It seems the most LIKELY plan is that they will sell a LOT of them in Asia very quickly, file a patent with the Chinese and claim that Apple's patent doesn't apply there. Eventually, they'll be shut down, but by then they'll have made enough money off the thing to make it all worthwhile.

It makes sense to me, I think they've guessed it right.

Really, who believes that any company can design (I mean the interior, they didn't have much work with the appearance) and produce such a product in sufficient quantities to make a profit from a monster sale until Apples lawyers stop them?
(Which is probably already being done… ThinkSecret will have to wait

I believe this is just advertising for an non-existing product. It will bring Luxo the medias attention for some days and spread their name. Did anyone know eMachines name before they copied the original iMac??

And I don't believe a moment anyone can build a device the size of an iPod shuffle - with recording (where's the Audio-In, btw?) and an FM tuner (how do you choose the frequency btw?)... if this product really exists I'm ready to believe that CherryOS is as fast as my G5

Subject: RC Wrong Again - What a Surprise

Sorry, RC, but you can patent the design of something. It is called a (surprise) Design Patent. Maybe you should do some research on the topic before putting your foot in your mouth yet again.

I don't see any iLemmings that are afraid of competition. What does annoy iLemmings is the blatent rip-off of Apple's innovative design. One could also ask why these companies feel the need to ride the wave of Apple's design, rather than letting their product stand on its own merits.

It's all about the WAR ON TERROR!

If you buy this knock off you're supporting terrorism. Osama and his band of merry men (RC), plan to undermine western culture with these WMA infected look-a-likes of the all powerful iPod. <insert evil laugh here>

Good luck with that. Apple will be shutting them down right quick.

fanatics so frightened by competition?"

It's not a legitimate competitor, it's a bootleg, and Apple will do to them what they did to eMachines for bootlegging the original iMac. Now, if you want to talk about competition, there's plenty of it against the iPod. But as Apple's sales numbers demonstrate, there's no reason to be afraid of it.

While you're at it, I have 2 real nice pieces of real estate to offer you in the NY City area: one is a bridge linking Manhattan to Brooklyn, it goes by the name Brooklyn Bridge. Once you buy it, you can put toll booths at both ends, and in no time flat you'll recoup the $50,000 you paid me for it ! Or else you can sell it foe scrap metal and rake in a couple $M. The second is a nice piece of undevelopped land right in the center of Manhattan that goes by the name Central Park. It's a steal at $1,000,000: you can instantly parcel it out and resell a couple lots, and that alone will return about 20X your initial investment. Call me day or night at 555-1212, but hurry, as I have to be in Argentina by the day after tomorrow ! ('')

Dear RC,

I believe that it is Copy Right rather than Copywrite....I suppose being a MS Windoze supporter implies that your spelling should be atrocious as well. I'm a non native English speaker but your spelling makes me cringe.

Subject: Question for IPOD owners

A 40 gig IPOD can hold 10,000 songs.

It's $0.99 cents a song on ITUNES. If you buy a CD, I'm guessing most would be around $10 (even though I think it's higher) and we'll say 20 songs (although most have 16).

We'll therefore make it $0.50 cents a song average for argument's sake.

That would mean it would take $5,000 or so (US) to fill a $300 IPOD.

I assume you are all paying for music right?

For everyone crying to the heavens about Copy Right laws and people "ripping" Apple off, I'm curious how many of them have paid for all their MP3's. If you have a SINGLE *ILLEGAL* mp3 on your PC or IPOD, then really you're no different in my eyes than Luxpro, and you shouldn't be pointing fingers except towards the person you see in the mirror.

What's the obsession (this post, Napster ads, etc.) with "filling" an iPod? Like if have only 23 GB of music on a 40 GB iPod it won't work or something?

And for the record, yes, I DO know people who have bought 2 or 3 CDs a month for the past 10 years. That means they own nearly 6,000 tracks legally. I don't know how many gigabytes that is, but I can promise you they've never said the phrase "Oh no, my iPod isn't full! I'll have to buy more music until it is!"
