GM Outfitting Car Stereos With Line-In Jacks for iPods
GM Outfitting Car Stereos With Line-In Jacks for iPods

It may not be as slick an iPod-in-car implementation as BMW or Mercedes, but General Motors has decided to take the low-road and will start including a line-in jack on the stereos found in a handful of its vehicles this years.
A testament to how ubiquitous iPod has become with FM transmitters and line-in devices, the GM press release is titled "Chevy HHR Will Make It Simple To Bring iPod Along For The Ride."

Along with the new Chevy HHR, radios featuring the new auxiliary input jack be standard equipment on 2006 models of the Chevy Impala and Monte Carl, Saturn VUE and ION, Pontiac Solstice, Buick Lucerne, and Cadillac DTS. GM says the the radios will be fitted to other new models over the next several years.
"General Motors has a long tradition of leading with technology that provides real benefits to our customers," said Mark LaNeve, GM North America vice president, sales, service and marketing in the press release. "We are excited to be part of the iPod revolution by offering our customers an easy way to play their favorite music in their GM cars and trucks."
Observer Comments
I was astounded that cars today don't have a line in jack as a standard when I bought my new Jeep a year and a half ago. Even before ipods, portable CD players would have benefitted from this.
I ended up having to get a $75 converter to get line in on my factory radio through it's cd changer connector so I could use my iPod through my car stereo.
At least GM is getting the idea.
Line in jacks should have been standard issue 5 years ago.
I bought a new car (not GM) about 1 year ago, and I got about 5 subsequent customer satisfaction surveys. I was happy with almost everything, except for the lack of line in, so I dinged them for it, multiple times. Hopefully the other auto manufacurers will get a clue... Somehow I doubt it though.

A lot of aftermarket stereos have included line-in jacks for years. Problem with them, of course, is that they don't integrate with the vehicles steering wheel controls. Chevy's new stereos won't help there, either.
P.S. Anybody else think the HHR looks like a cross between the original Dodge Durango (overall body), the current Durango (taillights), and an old Chevy pickup (hood)?
I put an Alpine CDA9835 with iPod module into my Blazer in January and it is the cat's @$$ (as the kids say). I've got about $1000 into the system, which also includes Alpine component front speakers and Alpine 6x9s for the rear. No subwoofer yet. It took a couple days for me to install the system myself, and mostly that was for the front speakers, as the stock doors wouldn't accomodate them, and I wanted the tweaters in the ceiling. The only mistake I made was mounting the iPod in the "steal-me" position on the dash. Actually, I converted a cup-holder, so the iPod can be put away, but that is a PITA every time I park in a public place. Better to toss the iPod in the glove compartment and wire it there.
The sound is phenominal. The only real problem is that navigating an iPod full of music is moire distracting than dialing a cell phone while driving. The in-dash controls are much easier to work with and keep eyes on the road than the iPod itself, but they don't navigate as quickly. Best to have a few big playlists than trying to search by artist. But to put this in perspective... I also have a low mileage Mustang GT that I love to drive. But the factory Mach sound system in it only beats my Blazer's on bass (and not by much, remember Blazer has no sub). The in-dash 6-disk changer is clumsy, no audio in for iPod and no changer controls like the Alpine if I get the adaptor. So, as I said, to put this into perspective... The Mustang sits in the garage and the Blazer gets driven now. The Alpine/iPod system is that good.

I recieved an iPod for my birthday in November of 2001. I had always been a mac fan since I was very young and as soon as I saw the iPod back in October I not only knew I had to have one but that this was going to be big. In December I purchased a JVC KD-SH55 head unit for my car. At the time this was the coolest head unit available with an MP3 line input available. Since then I've installed similar head units in my mother's, father's and sister's cars (as each one of them got their first iPods). I still for the life of me cannot figgure out why not every car out there has a line input. Today, it is secound nature for me to replace the stereo in any car I get my hands on with one that has an imput jack. Why the hell not?

A couple of years ago, my wife got an aftermarket car stereo with a line-in jack on the front panel... it was amazingly hard to find. It also plays MP3 CDs, but she's never had the need to burn one.
You definitely don't want to be fiddling with an iPod while driving. Either trust the shuffle/playlists, or have a DJ in the passenger seat.

There are already options for adding an iPod to many original equipment car stereos that have an input for a CD changer. I'll be getting an iPod2Car next week in my 2004 Toyota Prius. It connects to the dock connector on the iPod and charges the iPod, as well. Better, it will let me use the steering wheel controls or the dash controls to change tracks on the iPod. Monster has a system that will eventually have a readout for the track title, etc.
ok!! maybe im dumb, electronics just isn't my thing. But I have to ask... My car DOES have an input jack. Where can I get a line-in cord to connect the ipod to the stereo???
I've radioshack, bestbuy, searched online.. but the only thing are find is the radio transmitters and charging units. No one talks of or sells the cord to connect a video ipod to an input jack of a Car stereo.
CAn anybody enlighten me?

What is this supposed to mean? I really don't understand these posts that quote other people's posts and are changed. Was Intruder's post wrong or misleading, or are you just an anonymous jerk who doesn't get enough attention at home and struggling to get it here? Or is there some grey area in between, that I am not seeing? Did this post about you give you the attention you are craving? Expiring minds want to know.
