Bare Bones Updates BBEdit 8, Adds Subversion Support

Bare Bones Updates BBEdit 8, Adds Subversion Support

by , 2:00 PM EST, March 28th, 2005

Bare Bones Software updated its popular professional HTML and text editor Monday. BBEdit 8.1 "now includes support for Subversion, plus enhancements to its groundbreaking 'Text Factory' feature, and various interface refinements and fixes for reported issues," the company said.

Subversion is a leading Open Source next-generation version control system, used by Open Source projects, such as Apache, Samba, Zope and Debian.

"The Subversion project would not succeed without the community of developers and ISVs who improve it and incorporate it into their own products and services. We're very happy to see Bare Bones Software incorporate support for Subversion in BBEdit, which gives their customers the ability to collaborate with other team members in distributed environments," said Brian Behlendorf, CTO of CollabNet, the sponsor behind Subversion's development.

The update can be downloaded free of charge to registered BBEdit 8 customers.

BBEdit 8 sells for $199; a discounted cross-upgrade price of $129 is available to owners of Adobe GoLive or Macromedia Dreamweaver, and registered owners of TextWrangler. Upgrades from BBEdit 7.0 and 7.1 cost $49, while owners of older versions can upgrade for $59.

First, let me state that BBEdit is a fantastic text editor, and a must-have for any Mac-based programmer or web developer. And if you are a programmer or web developer who is NOT a Mac user, BBEdit is a perfect excuse to BECOME a Mac user. It's really that good! I've been a happy user since 1999, and used the free version (nйe BBEdit Lite) for a few years before that.

Now, if you're not yet a BBEdit user, let me give you a tip that will save you some money if you choose to become one: Buy the TextWrangler "crossgrade". TextWrangler is now free, so all you have to do is download and register that software, then you'll save yourself $70 off the purchase of BBEdit.

The crossgrade link is a little tricky to find, so here it is:

(Usual disclosure: I'm in no way associated with Bare Bones Software; just a happy customer).
