TMO Reports - Apple Announces OS X Tiger; Ships April 29
by , 8:35 AM EDT, April 12th, 2005
Apple Computer announced Tuesday the much anticipated release of Mac OS X 10.4 'Tiger' will go on sale Friday, April 29, beginning at 6:00 p.m. local time during special events at Apple's retail stores and Apple resellers.
The company announced it is now taking pre-orders of Tiger at its online store for US$129. Apple will also offer a Mac OS X Tiger Family Pack for $199 that includes a single-residence, five-user license.
Tuesday's announcement is ahead of the self-imposed shipping schedule Apple set in January when it said it would release the operating system update by the end of June.
Major new features of Tiger include Apple's new desktop search technology, Spotlight, to search the contents of documents, e-mail, images, contacts, photos, calendars and applications and Dashboard, small mini 'widgets' that display information such as stock quotes, news and weather information, and more.
Apple said Mac OS X version 10.4 will ship with 14 widgets.
Tiger also includes a new version of the Safari Web browser that includes a built-in RSS feed to track Web pages. Multiple RSS feeds can be merged into one easy-to-read interface to create a user's own personal news clipping service.
Other new Safari features: The ability to read PDFs from within Safari, a new private browsing feature which blocks personal information from being shared, cached or saved and a parental control feature that allows adults to block certain sites from children.
The new operating system also will include an updated version of iChat, which supports the new H.264 video codec for improved picture quality. Users will now be able to create audio conferences with up to 10 users and video conferences with up to four people in a 3-D virtual conference room. Contacts on a Buddy List will now see which iTunes song a user is playing and view it in the iTunes Music Store.
Tiger's new Automator workflow application will let users easily automate repetitive tasks without complex programming. Users can select from a library of more than a hundred customizable actions and drag and drop them to create an automated workflow. Workflows can also be saved and shared with other Mac users.
Tiger requires a minimum of 256 megabytes of memory and will run on any Macintosh computer with a PowerPC G3, G4 or processor and built-in FireWire.

You have to fill out a pdf form and pay an extra $10, but it is available.

I'm happy to see the Family Pack is available.
Since Amazon took away the rebate for family packs (and didn't have it available for pre-order) some people were starting to think they weren't going to sell it. Glad to see that was wrong.
As for Powermacs, NAB starts next Monday. I have a hard time believing that Apple will be showing off Final Cut Pro 5 on year old machines. My bet is you'll hear about new Powermacs from there.

This says you need to have bought a version of Tiger at the bottom. I bought a G5 on April 9th that came with Panther. Does that mean I can't get the upgrade? That's bull plop if so.

Come on Apple, give purchasers 14 days or something or at the very least, give recent purchasers a serious discount to upgrade.
Not to be mean or anything, but they're actually giving you 17 days.
Really, I understand it sucks and I do feel sorry for you, but if you want 14 days on top of the 17 days then that's 31 days. Why stop there? They could just offer free upgrades to anyone who's bought a computer in the last 3 months...hey, why not 6?
Eventually they have to have some kind of cut-off date, even if it sucks for some people.
(You're totally right about a discount, though. They should offer 30% off if you've bought in the last month or something like that.)
Sorry, I don't follow. How are they giving me 17 days? Because they're not actually shipping for 17 days?
I'm not saying they should extend the upgrade forever, but for people like me who just dropped 5 G's on a computer just over a week ago, it'd be a nice gesture to supply the upgrade for the cost of media.
If I at least got an upgrade discount though (say if they did it for purchasers within the last 14 days or something) I'd be happy.

I hope they announce new PowerMacs are coming. To help compliment this. I've been saving and am ready to buy. Of course, you should never be in a rush to spend money, but my G4 is starting to show some grey.
I too am making plans to get a new desktop/floor CPU. Not only that, I am also starting to show some gray, well "starting" is not quite correct as that particular hair color has been showing for a few years. At least I have that Sean Connery salt and pepper look.
I ordered Tiger from Amazon a few weeks ago, but still plan on going to the event at the local Apple Store.
I will also be upgrading my Adobe Creative Suite soon. New versions of my favorite software, yes winter is over.

Yeah, that's what I meant. I'm not sure, but usually they'll let you upgrade if you bought a Mac with Panther from today on. So in other words, they're selling Macs with Panther for 17 days that they'll give free Tiger upgrades to.
I don't know for a fact that it's working that way again, but if it does then I consider that 17 days of free upgrades.
I do agree with you about offering discounts to people like you, but I think they've done a good job with totally free upgrades. (Again, that's only if they continue to work like this. I don't know for sure.)
Sorry for piling on but have to agree with others. As a registered user of the board how in the world did you not know Tiger was coming? If you knew it was coming then gripes such as this make no sense. You knew it was coming so why didn't you wait? Duh!

Purchasing when I did was essential. I had no choice in the matter if I wanted to continue working. I'll leave it at that and mind your own.
I did know that Tiger was coming, but this is my first time purchasing around upgrade time. I figured they'd cut purchasers/loyal customers a little slack. Too bad.
And the fact I was able to purchase a PowerMac G5 rather than a Mac Mini does not make $129 any less money. Forgive me, but who the hell are you to know how easily I can or can't afford anything? People can save money can't they?
I guess now I've been here long enough now to know some people are awfully quick to judge. ![]()
Tue Apr 12, 2005 10:52 am Subject: Tiger upgrade for Mac newbie?
I just bought my first Mac a couple of months ago and really am looking forward to Tiger. It amazes me how Apple manages to "build-in" all the functionality of the stuff I used to pay to have on Windows (such as Stardock's Object Desktop). My Mac just rules!
Anyway, the real question here is this...Windows sucks when it comes to upgrades...you're much better off just formatting and re-installing the OS from scratch. What is it like with OS X? When I buy Tiger in a couple of weeks, can I just upgrade the Panther I am running now? Is it better to just format and start over? In other words, should I begin backing up applications and data now (or at least trying to figure out how)?
I'm sorry if this isn't the right forum, but with all the discussion on Tiger, I thought maybe somebody might have some prior experience with Apple upgrades.
Thanks a bunch! Hehe, I'm no longer a non-posting Mac virgin! ![]()
I upgraded from Jaguar right to Panther without a hitch.
You'll probably save some disk space with a complete reformat/reinstall, but otherwise you shouldn't have too much problem. Maybe wait and see what others experiences are. Check back here and MacFixIt especially for frequent updates.
I personally will probably do a complete reformat/install, but that's just a mild OCD kicking in.

RC interesting read. He is of course saying he is somewhat pissed with certain things that he bought a Mac to AVOID suffering. Now I wonder what computer software combination he would be referring to that these irritations remind him of so clearly? Your argument is somewhat like saying you should became a nazi to avoid invading Poland. But then the re-writing of history is that one very distinctive skill of yours.

Sorry. I am not defending the troll but I didn't get that from the article.

"Guest", what are you? 13? One day you'll learn that emotion you may read into online is not actually present when it is posted. I'm in no way irrate as you might believe.
So I'm either ridiculously wealthy and $5000 is pocket change or I'm now dangerously in debt. There's no such thing as middle class apparently.
Again, mind your business. The kind of computer I can afford holds no relevance.

I know because you just said you bought a $5000 machine you dolt. If you can't afford it then you either put yourself seriously in dept when you could have bought cheaper or you are just as stupid as you sound.
LOL, you are so out of touch with reality, if you say that saving $5000 for top of the line tweeked-out G5 is in any way similar to someone hoping to be able to buy a stripped $500 mini with their 5 yr old monitor and keyboard/mouse. And then to say HEY GIMMME MY FREE $130 UPGRADE while stomping your feet, PLEASE!
Why is it that the people who can actually afford (yes that's you being able to afford) things are the ones who expect and usually do get things for free. Too bad this time.

Before upgrading I recommend you back up the hard drive, at least your important data files.
NOTE: You can't just drag your system folder to a different drive or partition, it doesn't copy invisible files. Use a program such as Carbon Copy Cloner http://www.bombich.com, there are similar programs, but that is one I use.
I have not yet had a problem upgrading or updating, but don't take chances with your important files.
Have a good day

Someone else here earlier claimed this wasn't true. I have no idea. I'd use the phone before you go anywhere.

good call (no pun intended)
I also think I may be over the # of pieces of software i can get with the edu discount per year (already bought iLife/iWork '05), so I may have to have my sis just order it online
