Apple Offers $30 .Mac Discount [UPDATED]

Apple Offers $30 .Mac Discount [UPDATED]

by , 5:50 PM EDT, April 13th, 2005

[Updated April 15th, 2005 - 2:00 PM]

Apple Computer is offering new .Mac subscribers a discount for joining the service. From now until May 23rd, 2005, Apple is offering a US$30 discount to those buying a new .Mac retail box from either the online Apple Store, brick and mortar Apple Stores, or participating Apple resellers, making the cost for new subscribers $69.

The discount applies to retail boxes for .Mac, and not for those signing up directly through the .Mac Web page. Links to ordering .Mac through the online Apple Store instructs customers to: "Just add to your cart to see the special pricing."

.Mac offers users POP and webmail services, 250 MB of iDisk space, HomePage for building Web sites, Virex, iSync services, iCards, iCal, backup services, and more. Current members pay $99 per year for the service, but Apple has said that users wanting to renew at the discount should buy the retail box, and use the activation code inside to renew with the discount.

The company also noted that those buying .Mac from a third-party retailer will need to send in for a rebate to get the discount.

Subject: $30 discount, not $69 discount

A little friendly editing: If Apple was giving a $69 discount on .Mac, the cost would be $30.

The work around for existing .Mac users is to buy the retail box and then use the serial number to update the existing .Mac subscription.

I'm about to sign up for .Mac at $69 and am curious what would happen if I bought two boxes and used one to renew in a year from now. $99 is a bit excessive, IMO. $69 is reasonable. Anyone see if there are any limitations on the time? I can see Apple not going much below $69 and it's nice to get that covered.

So, what are you using .Mac for. Why might I want one? I have e mail, my DSL is too slow to transfer files, maybe a web page.

Subject: Have they gotten rid of all teh SPAM yet?!

Boy that would be a deal. Unless it's all SPAM like I get now. And I don't send out that address. I get less SPAM from addresses that I smear all over teh place.

Apple gets phished big a lot.

I want to use (and have used LOTS of trials) to do iSync and iDisk. The latter is available elsewhere, but I trust only Apple to the former (with some trepidation).

I heartily recommend fastmail.fm for email hosting. I probably would use their canned web pages etc for use with iPhoto.

Subject: No SPAM here

I have used ,Mac since the outset.

I have found the service to be SPAM free and I do not have genuine e-mails filtered out by Apple.

In contrast, other mail systems I sometimes use to check for mail, such as those of my ISP, my prior ISP and Hotmail are unusable because of the volume of SPAM.

My own domains are also SPAM free. I certainly recommend registering a domain and paying for e-mail addresses if you want to be SPAM free but I am quite at peace with my family using .Mac.

Yeah, I second that. Very few Spam messages get to me. Maybe an average of 10 a month. Not nearly as much as some other's that I know.

Stop using your .Mac e-mail for porn sites!
