Apple Hosts Exclusive Trailer for Joss Whedon's "Serenity"

by , 7:35 PM EDT, April 26th, 2005

Apple Computer has posted an exclusive trailer for the film Serenity, Joss Whedon's big screen adaptation of his TV show Firefly. Fox canceled Firefly in 2004, though the show was highly praised by critics and fans alike. Since that time, Serenity has become a highly-anticipated movie.

Serenity, the first film from the franchise, picks up where the TV show ended, pitting the crew of the space ship Serenity against the Alliance over the fate of River. In Serenity, however, we learn more of the backstory on what the Alliance did to her, as well as seeing more of what she is capable of doing.

The trailer being hosted by Apple is an exclusive. Joss Whedon has long been known for his cooperation with Apple in using Macs on-screen in his TV shows Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, as well as his screenwriting work with Steve Jobs' other company, Pixar, where he punched up scripts for the Toy Story franchise and other films.

If you are interested in learning more about Firefly before you see Serenity, you can buy the full 13 episode DVD set that includes episodes never broadcast by Fox (US$34.99 - Amazon).

Serenity will be released in theaters September 30th. You can learn more about the movie at the Serenity Web site.

"Wait, now failed TV shows can become major motion pictures? WTF? That
series had maybe two good episodes. The rest blew chunks."

Anonymous, you obsiously don't know good TV when you see it. Maybe, just maybe, like the Family Guy, FoX will see the error of their ways and bring it back.
I won't hold my breath, though.

Honestly, if you thought there were even two good episodes, buy the DVDs and watch it start to finish as it was intended. I think you will change your opinion.

Firefly is one of the best examples of SciFi, good story telling, great character building, and just plain fun available anywhere.

By far, my favorite episode is "Out of Gas", but every episode has something worth watching.

If you don't 'get' Firefly, that's OK, not everybody will. For those of us who do enjoy the adventures of Mal and his crew, this movie trailer is like foreplay to a 30 year old virgin on Viagra. (Um, not speaking from experience, mind you.)

Bring it on!

Agree in all regards.

I saw the series when it aired on Fox, but lost interest in it for some reason. I picked up the DVD set and started watching, and quickly realized that Firefly is a truly excellent show. Out of Gas is definitely a beautiful bit of storywriting on Tim Minear's part (incidentally, Minear was co-creator of Wonderfalls, another clever show Fox canned early in its season).

I attribute my loss of interest in the show while it aired to Fox's deplorable decision to air an inherently serialized show out of order. They moved the pilot episode to mid-season, of all things! No wonder people had trouble connecting with the characters - the audience got dropped into the show headfirst with no real 'beginning'. With the episodes in order, the show really does shine.

I saw the trailer last night before The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and I know I broke into a big smile. I have high hopes for the movie - maybe it'll convince Fox to take the show out of the on-air dustbin and re-air it again.

If you saw the show and were equivocal about it (as I was), buy the DVDs (or borrow them from a friend if you don't want to spend the money) and watch the season the way it was meant to be. If you hated it from the outset, it might change your mind, and if you thought the show had potential on-air that was squandered, you'll probably love it.

Oh, and the show has some excellent quotables. I don't really want to post any because I don't want to give anything away about the season, but trust me - there's some great stuff in there.
