Griffin's AirClickUSB Controls Computers From Afar
by , 12:30 PM EDT, April 26th, 2005
Griffin Technology Inc. is now shipping AirClickUSB, a remote control that enables users to control their Mac or Windows computers from up to 60 feet away. Rather than the infrared employed in most remotes, this one features RF technology, which means that the user does not have to be in the line of sight or even in the same room. It ships with the remote, a receiver that plugs into a USB port and can be extended with an included cable and a software CD.
AirClickUSB is pre-configured with the ability to control iTunes, PowerPoint and QuickTime on the PC or Mac, Keynote and DVD Player on the Mac and Windows Media Player on the PC. The remote features five buttons -- play/pause, next track, previous track, volume up and volume down -- and is identical to Griffin's AirClick for iPod, so it can also be used with that remote's receiver unit. Pricing is US$39.99.

Also check Keyspan's Express remote at
http://www.keyspan.com/products/usb/urm17a/
It can control a Mac through an Airport Express and can control other devices. It's not as complex as the ATI Remote Wonder. For controlling home theater, the most useful remote I've found is the Harmony Remote, now sold by Logitech:
http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/products/features/harmony/us/en,CRID=2078?ad=hmf
The Harmony remote is set up via your Mac (it has a mini-USB port). It works without having to learn some scripting system. You can push one button to watch a DVD, another to watch TV or listen to music and the remote will turn on the right equipment and set it up to do the task, all with one button.
