Gates: Apple the "Super-Small-Market Share Guy"

by , 6:00 AM EDT, May 3rd, 2005

Despite positive reviews of the recently released OS X Tiger, Apple Computer is still the "super-small-market share guy" that gets all the praise, Microsoft's chairman and co-founder Bill Gates told a group of business journalists Monday in Seattle, Wash.

Speaking before a meeting of the Society of American Business Editors and Writers, Mr. Gates took verbal shots at the Macintosh maker saying it was "great" that the general press was "writing about operating systems," but refused to respond to questions that Mac OS X Tiger came out earlier than Microsoft's next version of Windows with a number of features the software giant could only describe.

"Because they're the super-small-market share guy, they get all these statements about them," Mr. Gates said.

At present, Apple commands less than a 4% market share for PCs shipped both in the U.S. and internationally.

Mr. Gates then reminded the journalists that Mac OS X still can't compete with Windows when it comes to the amount of third-party software available for its operating system.

"You can always tell if you're working on a Mac or a PC," he said. "Just take your applications and stick them in (a Mac) and see if they run."

Mr. Gates has made a number of subtle but direct comments about Apple as of late -- a company Microsoft has a financial stake in. In February, Mr. Gates acknowledged the Apple iPod was a "great success," but that consumers wanted more choice than what Apple could offer and that Microsoft will gain market share in digital media devices in 2005.

On the subject of the iPod's success, Mr. Gates acknowledged Apple has done a "great job" in marketing and selling the iPod, but refused to acknowledged that Apple had beaten out Microsoft for dominance in music players. Mr. Gates vowed that customer choice will win out in the end.

"It's their (player), only their one music store, only their device," he said of Apple. "What we're doing is providing choices. So it's like the Apple computer versus the PC. With the PC you can buy from many companies so you get cheaper prices, you get more variety and here with music devices we're coming in with the same. But they're a strong leader in the space and I think as we gain share, people will be surprised."

On Monday, Mr. Gates also said Microsoft's next-generation Xbox gaming console -- code named Xenon -- will be more of a digital entertainment hub than its predecessor, making it even more of a PC hybrid than ever. The new gaming console will debut later this month.

Tangential point, but OS/2 was a great OS and would have succeeded had it not been for a combination of IBM's marketing ineptitude and Microsoft's cavalier disregard for this nation's antitrust laws.

If Apple where half brainy as they think they'd find more outsiders to help push their things forward, but seems they prefer to take on the OS/2 style way of thinking , and making the same mistakes.

Ahh the infamous OS/2 - funny how that OS was developed after the Mac OS. Funny how that OS is no longer being developed, but the Mac OS is. I don't see the parallel you are trying to make. Please elaborate.

Apple is brainy, it doesn't compete directly with Microsoft. If partners with them when it should and when it shouldn't. That's business. Microsoft is dominate because of a monopoly. That is how it rose to power and that is why it's the majority.

Apple has partnered with others to push the OS. Aligning itself with the Open Source movement. Don't worry, your windows will still be around for you. Apple is just trying to gain a few points.

Actually, Apple DID invent FireWire - but it became an IEEE standard, so other companies were able to use it, but had to come up with other names, unless they wanted to pay Apple a fee for using the term "FireWire" - hence "Lynx", "iLink", etc.

I have to admit that I love the articles that get all of this arguing going back and forth. Windows users taunting the mac users. Mac people should not get so angry though. Macs will always be in the minority, but so are rich people.

I happen to like both OS's. They both have their place. They are both better than the other depending on what you are using it for. Audio and video, Mac; programming and business, Windows. Neither one of them crash anymore, thank god. No more blue screen or sad mac icons. They plaqued my life for years. If apple wants to convert more windows users then they should at least have the scroll wheel working out of the box. Also why not have a start menu as an option. Linux has it. People are afraid of change, so if you make it at least behave somewhat similar, people will be more likely to switch. Remember most people are not professionals like us. I doubt most of them would even read this blog.

Where are your serious number-crunching computers? Nowhere? Not on a Mac at least. Use PCs for heavy lifting.

I'm eating vegetables for dinner with my fellow Mac Zealots just like our overlord vegetarian Steve Jobs does.

Windows XP still blue-screens and crashes.

"If apple wants to convert more windows users then they should at least have the scroll wheel working out of the box."

Uh, Apple's mice don't have scroll-wheels.

"Also why not have a start menu as an option. Linux has it. People are afraid of change, so if you make it at least behave somewhat similar, people will be more likely to switch."

Yes, that's an excellent idea. Let's make OS X take a hundred steps backwards by having it act more like the operating system that badly ripped it off. That way people who are fed up with Windows will be turned off from OS X, because of its new similarities to Windows. A solid plan.

Being put into clusters to form low cost super-computers. They're called Macs.

But I wasn't asking for number-crunching computers. I was asking for the numbers that show Mac sales are decreasing. Can't you provide them?

The ones that overheated were a handfull of G5 Power Macs. Not iMacs. Can't you get anything right?

The ones that overheated were countless G5 Power Macs as well as iMacs. Can't you get any quality from Apple?

Plug in a mouse with a scroll wheel into a recent version of OS X (10.3, maybe earlier). The scroll wheel works "out of the box". So does the 2nd button.

Huh, so G5 iMacs do have a few reported cases of overheating, too. Of course, the problem's so small-scale that I'd never even heard of it until you said it and I ran a search.

Also, the number of reports of overheating are only "countless" if you can't count very high. Try harder.

"I promise I'll keep posting to you as a Mac Fanboy and as if you're taking my Steve Jobs pitch about rising market share seriously."

Awww, are you afraid of alittle rise in Mac sales? But, hey, maybe I'm wrong. I was wrong about there being no cases of G5 iMacs overheating, so maybe I'm wrong about this, too. So why don't you show me the sales data that proves the Mac market share is decreasing? You'd like to prove me wrong, wouldn't you? Come on and do it, then.

I mean, you're so certain Mac sales are decreasing, you must have one solid source of evidence. Please show it to me so that I can stop living with this crazy misconception that they're actually increasing.

Huh, so G5 iMacs do have lots of reported cases of overheating. Of course! The problem's so large that I'd rather not talk about it. I ran a search for it in Spotlight and it doesn't show up so I guess that "revolutionary" and "life-altering" tool doesn't work that great.

Also, the number of reports of overheating are "countless" and I can't count that high. Using a Mac is certainly harder than using Windows.

Awww, are you afraid of a little rise in Mac sales? But, hey I'm wrong. I was wrong. I'm wrong about this, too. Sales data has proven the Mac market share is decreasing. You'd like to prove me wrong, wouldn't you? Come on and ditch your Macs people and prove me wrong some more.

I mean, you're so certain Mac sales are decreasing. Please show me how to play quality games with quality frame rates on a Mac. And no, I don't mean games that ran on OS 8.

Subject: I don't understand

how Windows users can claim that they run on a superior system. I used to use Windows, but after a month of trying to cope with the spyware and pop-ups and all the other #@!$ing bull#@!$ on XP, I said #@!$ it. The only problem I've ever had on a Mac running OS X was that the battery in the laptop died, and the battery was about two years old. I don't have to worry about the #@!$ing spyware, or the random Lesbians4Free #@!$ popping up. I don't have to run ad-aware anymore every time I feel like going on the internet. Hell, I can drop Explorer from my HD and not force the OS to go haywire. If you can cope with all the bull#@!$ that Windows has going for it, then that's great for you. For me, I'll take a system that lets me do what I want without needing a drink to go with it.

I came across this site recently. Cool site. I run both Mac and Windows, I don't have spyware problems. Service Pack 2 helps a lot.

Subject: Blue screen of death

Oh, and by the way, for those of you who continually refer to the 'blue-screen-of-death'....UPDATE YOUR OS!! The blue screen was essentially "abolished when XP was released. So comments about the blue screen are actaully comments about win 98, a nearly 10 year old OS. Macs never have problems do they? Oh, wait, thats right, they just realeased a new POS OS. But since Macs don't ever have problems, I wouldn't imagine that the updates provide anything new aside from more eye candy. Afterall, thats all Macs are: Eye Candy. "

Really? How come I continually saw that screen on XP before I switched to Mac. It's been about a year now, and nope....no problems. You'd think with 95% market share they have enough resources to release their OS on time....oh wait, they're probably trying to get some ideas from Tiger....

BSOD was essentially abolished by the random forced reboot in XP (although you can actually get the BSOD, most of the time the OS just restarts. That is the default configuration setting.).

Evidently it will be replaced by the RSOD (Red Screen O' Death) in Longhorn. http://software.silicon.com/os/0,39024651,39130264,00.htm

Ahh, the benefits of innovation.

MacOS is just "eye candy." Heh, that's funny. Good thing Virginia Tech is only working on "eye candy." Same with the US Army with their 1566 machine grid. Can't do any serious computing with all that "eye candy."
