Apple Releases Panther Security Update

Apple released a security update for Mac OS X 10.3.9. Security Update 2005-005 addresses "a number of security enhancements," and Apple is recommending it for all Panther users.

The security patch updates the following components:

  • Apache
  • AppKit
  • AppleScript
  • Bluetooth
  • Finder
  • Foundation
  • Help Viewer
  • lukemftpd
  • sudo
  • Terminal
  • VPN
  • X11

The security update weighs in at 6.4MB, and can be found in the Software Update control panel, if you are running Mac OS X 10.3.9. Apple has posted detailed information on the update, including exactly what was fixed in each of the above-listed components, at its support site.

Every time Apple releases a security update, I look at it as no big deal. I mean seriously, how many other Mac users have ever had a problem with users and programs controlling, or accessing their computers, security update or not?

Sorry to burst your bubble, Guest, but he who goes by 'Realty Check' is not the real troll we all know and love. Someone who is trying to steal the love and popularity. Look at the Joined date and number of posts.

Back onto the topic, I am glad to see that Apple has not alienated the people who have not yet, for whatever reason, upgraded to Tiger. I am glad that I don't have to worry about buffer overruns in TIFF files anymore.

Not to be overly picky but o.k. I will . . .it fixes Apache buffer overflow problems and AppKit issues with TIFF images. I'm just glad my libXpm is safe now. Whew! I was losing WAY too much sleep over that! (j/k) : D

I forgot to add, I threw out my Mac and switched back to Windows. What a relief that is. Macs don't have a Security Center like Windows.

Did the update thing and so far all's well (10.3.9 on Cube). I'm going to wait with tiger at least until .2 since I'm so extremely happy with the latest Panther update, especially the long awaited fixes of font handling. I am drooling though, every time I read a review...

For what it's worth zpok, i've got a new 15" powerbook (just 2 days ago) and it came with Tiger installed. I haven't *really, really* messed around with it (installed beta software, lots of third party plugins) but it's running just fine... in fact, boot times are faster (not just cuz of the newness), spotlight rocks, mail is a little cleaner, safari is a little improved, dashboard is cool, and that's about it.

the real kicker is spotlight. and smart folders (like smart playlists in itunes). unbelievably convenient.

anyway, just to let you know!

I couldn't believe the speed the first time I tried it.

Any predictions for the upcoming WWDC? A Tiger review is almost a given. And I doubt 10.5 will be mentioned for quite some time. OS X Tabby?
